what would happen if engine is on with not enough coolant?

  as stated.
  
  will the engine die away with no explosion?
  
  after the incident, will putting in enough coolant restore the engine back to normal health again, considering all the other factors are present, eg enough fuel and properly maintained etc?

  overheat of engine. then u see smoke coming out..

  coolant pipes bursting (expanding air in the pipes) and piston seizing in the cylinders will occur if u let it keep running w/o coolant. the engine block might crack as well. Basically, running an engine w/o coolant will result in permanent damage.

  well the cylinder head will warp 1st before before the coolant pipes burst...then your engine oil will mix with the remaining coolant and go into the whole cooling system and engine lubricating system...
