my frenz race with their auto cars.
its not a race car....the SLR is more of a GT crusier...a racer is more like the pagani zonda...Originally posted by alleggerita:Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren has a 5-speed auto tranny..can it race? You bet..![]()
When TS say race, I thought he say something like straigh line drag race ma..Originally posted by AE86tofu:its not a race car....the SLR is more of a GT crusier...a racer is more like the pagani zonda...

i think that the diff is not whether its auto or manual.. rather.. is it using the robotic clutch plate/conventional clutch plates or torque convertor...Originally posted by AE86tofu:its not a race car....the SLR is more of a GT crusier...a racer is more like the pagani zonda...
DSG has got to be one of the best advancements in gearbox technology..Originally posted by n0x:i think that the diff is not whether its auto or manual.. rather.. is it using the robotic clutch plate/conventional clutch plates or torque convertor...
look at the veyron... using vw's dsg.... but its still an auto box....
whats CVT ?Originally posted by alleggerita:And regarding gearboxes that has both manual and auto functions, there are 2 kinds..
1) The automatic transmission with manual override..means it's a torque convertor/CVT transmission, but they have a function for you to override it and up/down gear manually..this is to give you greater control over speed and engine braking..
But usually this kind of manual override in an automatic gearbox won't hold a gear at the redline..it will still shift up at the redline for most auto box with manual override function..some will hold gears at the redline like a true manual box though..one example is BMW's auto box with manual override function..it'll really hold on to the gear at the redline until engine overheat and kaput..(or maybe it'll shift up when it sense the engine overheating..I also not very sure..)
2) The other kind is robotised manual gearbox, one example is BMW's SMG..it means it's actually a true-blue manual gearbox, but the clutch is automatic..means the engagement and disengagement of the clutch is automatic..all you need to do is to up/down gears..and if wanted, it can also act like an automatic gearbox..meaning it can also shift gears automatically and you don't need to do anything..
But one thing about robotised manual boxes..the upshifts are usually never smooth like an automatic gearbox..but if you can ease off the throttle a bit duing upshifts, it'll make the shift smoother..but technology has improved to a point where it is really very smooth in automatic operation now, but will still feel a bit of jerk..just like when you are changing gears in a manual car, very hard to make an upshift in a manual car smooth..
So go decide for yourself which kind of gearbox listed above you would like to get..
Edit: typo..
Something that smooths out acceleration and improves fuel economy so well, you can't feel sh|t till you floor the pedal to the metal.Originally posted by iaintmad:whats CVT ?
get your facts right...the DSG is NOT an auto box...it still uses a clutch plate...it DOES NOT have a torque converter....Originally posted by n0x:i think that the diff is not whether its auto or manual.. rather.. is it using the robotic clutch plate/conventional clutch plates or torque convertor...

Continuously Variable TransmissionOriginally posted by iaintmad:whats CVT ?
But is it ONLY torque convertors grouped under automatic transmission? The DSG gearbox also can shift automatically ma, so cannot be considered as automatic transmission also?Originally posted by AE86tofu:get your facts right...the DSG is NOT an auto box...it still uses a clutch plate...it DOES NOT have a torque converter....
to me... anything tt doesnt require me to use my left leg and shift the H formation at the gear box is considered auto.... with or without manual override...Originally posted by AE86tofu:get your facts right...the DSG is NOT an auto box...it still uses a clutch plate...it DOES NOT have a torque converter....
I agree with NoxOriginally posted by n0x:to me... anything tt doesnt require me to use my left leg and shift the H formation at the gear box is considered auto.... with or without manual override...
to you anything using torque convertor is auto...
we juz have diff definations of it...![]()
so u're telling me that a manual transmission which uses a friction plate clutch and has solenoids and actuators to release the clutch/shift its gears is considered an automatic transmission??? and that all F1 cars use a automatic transmission??Originally posted by n0x:to me... anything tt doesnt require me to use my left leg and shift the H formation at the gear box is considered auto.... with or without manual override...
