Saturday October 20, 2007Luxury car thieves staging accidents to steal cars
KUALA LUMPUR: A gang of thieves whose modus operandi is to fake an accident before robbing victims of their luxury cars is on the prowl.
Police have received five such reports in the last two months. The cases involved mostly Honda CRVs and Toyota Camrys.
Brickfields CID chief Deputy Supt Jude Pereira said the three suspects, aged between 28 and 34, would move around in a black KIA Spectra or a white Proton Iswara.
He said the five cases occurred in Sri Hartamas, Jalan Klang Lama and on the Federal Highway.
DSP Pereira said one of the suspects would stay in the vehicle while the other two would approach the victim after he alighted from his car to check the damage and ask for compensation.
“One of the suspects is thin and tall. The other is quite heavily built and on the aggressive side. They are dangerous criminals. The heavily-built suspect has been known to flash a parang,” he said yesterday.
DSP Pereira said that in the latest incident on Wednesday, a lawyer was robbed of his Camry.
In the 8.40pm incident, the 29-year-old lawyer was also punched in the face when he tried to hold on to one of the doors of his car.
DSP Pereira advised the public not to stop if they were involved in such accidents but to instead drive to the nearest police station.
Anyone involved in a similar accident can contact the Brickfields police at 03-22742222 or Rakan Cop hotline at 03-21159999 or SMS to 32728.
