Quite a nice car..but i tink continentant brand car quite expensive to maintain leh..Originally posted by silkmagic:Thinking of getting one. Manual / 1.4. Please advise
continentant??? Whats tt??? I think u mean continental rite? I believe u drive a car too rite? Do u spend any money on maintance(other than fuel ofcouse!) on yur car??? For of me n most y friends, we dun spend a penny(Cars includes Japs n Germans)other than the servicing every 10000kms which is inevitable. So all this bullshit abt maintance being sky high for EU cars r unfounded unless u r getting a 10+yr old car. The 207 being a relatively new car , i believe it will do fine just by going through its regular servicing.Originally posted by Givache:Quite a nice car..but i tink continentant brand car quite expensive to maintain leh..Givache

Let me ask u a question, did ur brakes, clutch ever wore out b4? I dun think so rite. Cos it takes nearly 150000kms under normal driving condition to completely wear off 1. But then again, the checking of these wear n tear will b included in ur regular servicing.Originally posted by Givache:yah continental.....
yah me driving...
hmm...mayb u r rite..but how about parts wear out...like brake , clutch and so for?Givache

think u can have some reviews of the 1.4 at http://www.uk.ciao.com/products/79552.htmlOriginally posted by silkmagic:Thinking of getting Peugeot 206 Manual / 1.4. Please advise
Maybe i got the no. wrong, but it took me 2 yrs to klick 40,000kms so do u think its resonable to change ur brake pads every 2yrs? Well i do. What i'm trying to establish is a EU car do not have a much higher rate of wear n tear than tt of a Jap car.Originally posted by ricebandit:raider, i disagree with you on the lifespan of the mechanical components... go check the car manual and it will state the estimated lifespan of the various parts. things like timing belts, fan belts, brakes (if you can go for more than 40,000 km without changing pads, you super lucky.. never kenah traffic jam of stoplights) Also, on the whole, a lot of consumables tend to be more expensive when you do a service... if you own an EU car, original parts tend to be more expensive. i.e. oil / air filters etc.. thats not to say that all jap / korean cars are cheap either... depends on which model..
Okie Dokie, point taken. but for comparison's sake, lets take two cars of "even standing"; the Volvo S40 and the similar Toyota Camry 2.0.Originally posted by RAIDER:Maybe i got the no. wrong, but it took me 2 yrs to klick 40,000kms so do u think its resonable to change ur brake pads every 2yrs? Btw how much more expensive would an oil/air filter, brake pads, engine oil, spark plugs, wiper fluid, radiator fluid, etc of a EU car cost more than tt of a Jap car??? From my experiences, alot of these r competible wif both, thus costing the same...Anyway like what u have mentioned parts prices r dependent on e brand n model of the car. So u do not expect e Lexus spare-part to cost like a Mitsubitshi's. Similarily u do not expect a Merc gearbox to cost like tt of a VW...Infact C&C charges quite resonable fees for e servicing of a Merc. Its only cost $60 more to service a E-class than a Galent (which is also done by them).
I dun think u would consider the 15.9k as maintanence cost would u??? Cos the main issue here is not abt the cost of e car but the maintanance cost of it...Originally posted by ricebandit:Okie Dokie, point taken. but for comparison's sake, lets take two cars of "even standing"; the Volvo S40 and the similar Toyota Camry 2.0.
Brand new, an S40 would cost $133,888 (SM Motors) With coe, whilst a Camry weighs in at $117,988 (Borneo)
That purchase figure accounts for $15,900
lets say that after 2 years, you decide you want to upgrade... at today's prices, a 08/99 Camry (not the current model, but facelifted from the previous model) will fetch just on $96,000... a 09/00 model S40, being a whole year newer, fetches $103,800. Factor in a conservative depreciation rate of $7,500 a year (assuming you paid for the cars fully in CASH) and the volvo would be around $96,300.. so that tips $300 bucks in favour of the volvo.
Basic running costs, such as daily driving, come into play. I know from experience, having driven an S40 almost daily for 2 years, that i'd get a real world 11.8 - 12 litres/100km, and a 2 litre camry burns about 10.5 - 11 litres / 100km (various sources). figure the difference to be 1 litre /100km, and over two years, you travel 40,000km, that works out to be 400 litres, over two years, and at todays pump price of $1.27 / litre, you are looking at $508.
Maths so far... $15,900 - 300 + 508 = $16,108.
THAT is the cost of ownership of a volvo over a camry, DISREGARDING your "little or no difference running costs" argument. and this is only over the span of 2 years. go figure what it costs if you actually decide to keep the car for the whole 10 years. I dunno bout you, but 16 grand is nothing to sneeze at, it would definitely cover my dream home entertainment system with big arse plasma screen and all that... or it could go to saving for my kid's education... or renovating the place.... but if you believe theres no difference, then ok by me.
