  i drove for a short distance with the handbrake up.... will anything happen to the car? how come the car is still able to move with the handbrake up?

  sure can move.. but the brake is gonna heat up..
  u try reversing with the handbrake up.. it moves super slow..
  my friend once drove with the handbrake up..
  the next thing he know.. he smell sth burning..
  then off to the factory..

  if your parking brakes can make the car stay still in a slope on neutral (dunno if your car is auto or manual) it should be okay...

  the engine should be fine.. all it is doing is producing more power...
  
  the problem is the brakes.. if the thing can stop the car from rolling off a slope, it's doing its job as brakes right?

  Doesn't your car feel particularly strained? And since auto cars will crawl forward when you never step on accelerator, didn't you find it fishy when your car doesn't crawl forwards?

  If it was only for a short distance, you probably didn't do any harm to the vehicle. At worst, you probably wore down the brake pads on the rear wheels (the handbrakes on most passenger vehicles are connected only to the rear brakes) a little more than usual, and might have to replace them a bit sooner. Brake pads are normal wear items anyway.

  if in D mode and the handbrake is fully engaged, the car will move meh? i did that before on my corolla, but it doesn't move at all

  haha.. no worries lah.. just that your handbrakes might be worn out. A simple trip to any workshop to check them will do. There shouldn't be any lasting damage to the car.

  ha ha ha ... last time my colleague drove my car with the handbrake on ... boy it was a long distant .... we met an accident ... when car sent to workshop, realised the pad were fully burnt ... sigh ... that was costly for a simple thing ... he got to pay for the damages, I got a earful from my wife ...
