i guess it boils down to diff school of thoughts; ebrake locks the real wheel during the drift itself whereby the rear side is moving away from the turn direction. drifting in its strict terms refers to controlling the amount of "swinging out" of the rear by how much torque is applied to the rear (which is why drifting can only be done by rear drive cars), not by how much skid caused by the rear brakes. therefore, when u're using the ebrakes, what you're effectively doing is the power slide.
when u see a ff car "drift", its not really drifting, just sliding its rear.
well, i was talking abt FR not FF, just like u said, FF if use handbrake, its just sliding..true enough and in Formula D, if u watch the show before, the requirement for the car are all FR. Abt swinging out...well...not really swinging, drift means "enabling to control a car in an out of control situation" well, some terms called drifting, power slide too. Alot of techniques other than this, shift lock, acceleration or power over, clutch kick. Trust me, u will understand wats the e-brake for when u get the "drift bible DVD" taught by keiichi himself.
