how to tell your auto car at what speed it changes the gears

  Wow...u dont know a simple fact?

   

  There is no constant fixed point for auto gear to shift up - its all based on how heavy ur foot is(unless u activated the Tiptronic).

  look at the rpm lor. u will know it changed gear when the needle drops all of a sudden. u can usually feel it anyway. eh daniel, havent go overseas?

  you can hear from the sound.... thats what i know what i drives honda jazz.. the rpm also another thing you can see la... basically why do u even wanna care abt the gear?

  if based on rpm, what rpm for what gear?

  thinking of installing a rpm meter in addition to the factory one.  It should allow me to look at the meter with ease.

  That'll be just stupid, to fit ANOTHER RPM meter just for you to see the engine speed better. You want those used in drag cars, size as big as your fuel cap flap? With shift indicators? If the standard instrument cluster bothers you, well alright you can whatever you want.

   

  Automatic cars will shift according to what loads the engine is being put through and what you foot is telling the control ECU; light foot and it assumes you're cruising, so it'll typically shift at around 2.5-3k rpm. Want to race to the next traffic light? Transmission will shift at peak horsepower output usually around 4.5-6.5k rpm to maintain in powerband.

   

  The "CHANGE NOW" method sounds awesome, but the technology ain't here yet... but hey i'm sure someone out there is working on this now. :D

   

  "CHANGE NOW!"

  "FIRST GEAR!"

  "GO BACK TO FORTH, THEN THIRD, THEN SECOND!"

  "REVERSE!! REVERSE!! REVERSE $*%*!!!"

  so far, in short, no one knows what gear a car is in for sure at any given time, for auto cars. I hope it is technically correct to say so.

  actually, all of you are right in saying that there is no need to know for auto cars. True. Agree. Concur.

  I just curious bah.

  no fixed speed. Look at the rpm and you will know when the gear changed...

  Some cars got display. The IS250, on top of the speedo and tacho, got one display that can be switched to let you know what gear the car is in.. but unless you're in the 'Sport' mode, its only for own information only and nothing else i guess.

  The mazda 3 also, is an auto but got the display on the tacho (i think) that lets you know what gear the car is at.

  Oh, I also had always had thought that I saw some cars on tv has such a display of gears in digital format. Your reply confirmed this is true.

  Many do not find any reason for displaying the gear the car is running at for auto cars. I guess, its not just me, LEXUS, one of the world's most advanced cars, engineers/designers think so too.

  I am totally amazed.

  also,

  I think even when the rpm is at high rev, the gear need not be in the high. Thus, looking at the rpm is not exactly correct. however, I am only a novice. layman.

  Experiment with your auto-car and you'll find out. 

  You can detect when the gear changes one.

  If you step very gently, the gears can change up at 2000rpm. 

  You step hard and it won't change so quickly at low rpm.

  Try going flat out from a starting position to see how the car handles.  See can bring to red-line or not. 

  Quite interesting.

  depending on the type of gear system used.

  for hydralic gear system, it is based on air pressure on the hydralic gear.

  for ecu control system, you could tune to what you want. but usually already fixed by manufacturer.
