STOCKHOLM - CHINA'S Geely
Automotive has submitted the only concrete bid so far for Ford
Motor-owned carmaker Volvo Car Corporation, a business daily reported
on Saturday, citing an undisclosed source.
The US carmaker put money-losing Volvo Cars up for sale in December
last year as it looked to cut costs and raise cash in the face of
plunging industry-wide auto sales.
The firm said in July it was in discussions with a number of parties on the car maker.
An announcement of which suitor Ford had selected to initiate final
takeover negotiations with was expected some time next month, Swedish
business daily Dagens Industri reported.
'It is necessary if the deal is to be completed before the turn of the
year, which Ford has set as a target,' the newspaper cited a source
involved in the sales process as saying.
A Volvo Car Corporation spokeswoman declined to comment on the report. -- REUTERS

Fundamentally speaking, there shouldn't be a problem. All are from the Volvo family. Volvo trucks/buses can buy over the car arm and leave them to their own business.
Frankly i prefer if Proton take over Volvo rather than Lotus. At least can gain more knowledge and profits

Agreed. Safety and build quality will improve if Proton bought Volvo. And, given the sizeable collection of platforms and technological elements... Proton will fare better...
woah gee...wat?

Since Persona and Exora launch Proton has already improved in terms of quality wise except they need more experience in buliding more refined engine.Lotus only assists them in handling and chassis...Volvo got many great 5 cylinders engine.Current Director of Quality is Dr Eppel an ex-BMW Quality executive.

God, how I love naturally-aspirated Volvo 5-cylinder engines. Sounds wonderfully deep and offbeat, a nice burble. Like the sound of a V10 on 50% discount. ![]()
True...That's my dream car if i got the $$$$$$,For now i'm contented with experiencing both Honda and Proton cars..

Proton is lucky to have Lotus under their wings, but they are not making full use of it. I feel that, currently, Proton's lineup is very half-hearted. Neither here nor there. Their cars handle quite nicely thanks to Lotus inputs but not class-leading. Some are sporty cars (e.g. Satria Neo), some are sensible cars (e.g. Persona & Exora). They should be focused. And I think they can focus in either directions:
1) Be on par with Japanese, or Koreans at least, in terms of dynamics, design and build quality.
2) Go the sporty way since they can employ the help of Lotus. Incorporate Lotus more in their R&D stage. Design more sports cars and sports sedans. Give their brand a sporty image.
Just my 2 cents worth. I think no. 2 is the way to go since they have Lotus. Don't waste the talents over at Lotus. See what they did to a Lada Riva in Top Gear Season 1? ![]()
