I'm lost on how to get from place to place. I'm so used to taking the public transport that I don't know how to get where I want on the roads.
How do all of you begin learning about the routes & which expressway to take... etc.?
get yourself a GPS system? or maybe buy a street directory?
You could use bus routes and slowly learn which roads links to which road.
go a few round , you will remember ,
street directory is helpful also. stop somewhere and read when you r lost.

Wow, that's great. Must be really easy for you to get to places. It's really nerve-racking for me, & i've yet to drive out on the road by myself since i've got the license. (No car to use.)
But i'm renting a car next week to drive some friends out for dinner but there is so much i'm worrying about: what if I screw up parking & bang onto someone's car; or take too long & other driver's horning, what if I am so nervous that I miss a turning point... etc.
Please drop me any tips, just to set my mind at ease!
well, you got to be just very careful.
stuffs like parking, if you're not good at it, go slow.
it's better to get horned than banged, right? horned dont need pay, BANGED need.

I'm quite surprised.. i felt that since u always take transport ie. moving around, you should be quite familiar with the roads in singapore.. main. trunk roads of cos... unless u always sleep or read in ther bus?
becos its through my frequent bus rides that I'm familiar with the roads and i dont get lost when i drive, unless it's those small and funny ulu ulu roads
you would get used to it after driving for a while...
you would get used to linking roads with roads after a while...
you would learnt how to explore alternatives routes to your destinations after a while...
You should also keep a look out at the signboards that shows you where to go, where is the nearest expressway etc...
In short you would get used to it...
remember expressway exit.
Main idea, remember big road follow like small road.
E.g. i live in jurong, I wanna go town, how do i go?
Via holland village, so from jurong to holland village which route to take?
Or you at tiongbaru wanna go to eunos, by which route? PIE, eunos exit, and you find your way from the expressway. know all expressway in singapore and roughly know where is the entrance/exit. Slowly you will familiarized with all roads in singapore.

Most ppl get up bus/mrt only sleep or day dream. Where got time to see how to get from a place to another.
Me, I always had that sense of how to get someplace. If I do not know how to go, I would check online before setting off.
@TS, just drive. Ask your friends to shut up if need be. Planning your route beforehand usually works. streetdirectory.com can be your best friend.
For me, I will use streetdirectory.com to plan the route beforehand.
Write down explicitly which junction to turn, what roads to travel and what significant place to take mental note of as a reference etc...
