i was thinking of getting a second hand dihatsu charade 87 model.... the thing is that its a 5 door car with a turbo engine.... if i'm not mistaken, only 3 doors charade are allow be modified with a turbo engine... if so, this car that i'm currently considering is illegal to drive then, when it comes to inspection.... will the car be confiscated? pls give advices as i'm pretty new to cars....

hi..=) this is some advice i can give u as i just bought an 83' car.
First thing for such old cars is to decide if u wanna extend its COE? if yes...for 5 or 10 years?
i see you have about 4 more years before the car reaches its Grand 20th Birthday.
If you are intending to extend it, bring it to Vicom or AA for the through checkup. The report given to you is very well worth it. Personally I have a very pleasant time at Vicom near upper serangoon area. The staff were very patient and nice to explain the details of the report to me.
In the inspection, they will tell you what is legal or illegal for the car. They wont tow your car away, dont worry.
If you are intending to keep it for only 4 more years, well....if the car looks old and you dont show up at places nortorious for illegal car races, then i would say you are pretty safe as the police tend to give more "chance" to such old cars. *pls dont quote me, just a personal opinion*.
When renewing COE, bear in mind that should you renew it for 5 years, you cant renew it anymore after the term. Which means if you really like your car, there is nothing you can do about it and you would have to send it to the scrap yard.
For 10 years, you can scrap the car anytime you want and get the pro-rated amount in the form of a voucher. However, if you want cash, you may sell the voucher to dealers. They will take a small percentage ranging from about 3-5% of the voucher price.

that is right ... not more than 20 yrs. Guess most cars will be worn out by then, but of course the most lasting cars eg mercedes probably can last longer than that.

nono..can more than 20 years...u can keep it forever if u want...as long as when u renew the COE, u renew it 10 by 10 years.
Its the moment when u renew it for 5 yrs...u will have to scrap it by 5 years. -
