Need Advices

Have been looking at a few cars but can't really decide for one
I am looking for a car that is fuel efficient, spacious (fit 5 adults comfortably), <1.6, reasonable pricing and reliable. Feel like getting a Manual one but others advised for Auto, *hai* which is better? Some say after using Auto you would not want to go back Manual?
Should I get a a New one or 2nd Hand (say <24mths) or a >10yrs car for day to day use? One of the drivers to this car has not got her license and the other one (that's me) have never own a car but had driven on/off using other peoples' car but have ride for >5years. Therefore, overall can say not very "steady" on car (coz like newbie) but of course not dangerous or reckless (therefore considering also for 2nd Hand
or should go for New as long as we could afford it??).
Some models on my mind:
1) Toyota - Vios (~$65138A) or Corolla (only available is ALTIS ~$73988A which is 1.6...ALTIS good same as previous model???)
2) Honda - Jazz (~$72500A) or City (~$69500A but City look really ugly and I also notice the "metals" feel so light when I open the doors)
3) Nissan - Sunny ( (~$70000A/EX or ~$76500 A/SS) look ugly on its butt & does its rear drum brake a bad idea?)
4) Mazda - 323 (~$69888A)
5) Hyundai - Matrix (~$67888A 1.6 GLS)
Some suggested 1.3L Turbo charged Daihatsu YRV & Suzuki Ignis GT and Proton Wira...& personally I find Honda City's body a bit light... how fuel economy is IDSI engine compare to Toyota VVTI?
Need advices on what are their pros and cons pls Thank you in advance. -
How abt getting a Mit Lancer? Mine car goes up to 550km for a full tank and the interior is quite spacious.

From the list you gave,the Hondas are a good choice.<1.6 Cc as you would prefer.The matrix is a popular choice too but,I would go for the Honda over the Hyundai. -

i've gone through the wira, and now we're driving the mazda 323...
the quality of the wira is attrocious, things that failed include the door locks, window motors, boot release and even the engine mounting was going.
in contrast, the current 323 is a reliable workhorse, no problems since we took the keys. it's also quite fun to drive, good steering, but the fuel consumption is a little higher than the other 1.6s if you drive hard.

Used to drive my dad's second hand proton saga, then drive a 2nd hand 96 model Mit Lancer , and currently driving a new lancer bought last year.
Having driven 2nd hands cars before, i am pretty clear in my mind that i would want to drive a brand new car. you never know what happened to the car previously when you buy second hand .... the dealer will tell you "oh the owner wants to upgrade" or wants to leave the country, but they will never tell you that the previous owner had crashed the car and quickly want to dispose of it to innocent first time buyers...sad, but true fact of life here.
Can let you know my honest opinion about lancer since i am driving one. Essentially, no problems is getting you from point A to point B. Cabin is relatively spacious ( think more voluminous than Vios or City) for its class. The engine for my model is GDI and is quite fuel economical ...can hit about 12.8 km/L. However think the toyota corolla 1.5L VVTI engines can hit about 14-15 km/L ! I confirmed with at least two frends who are driving them.
The continuos variable transmission CVT results in a really smooth transmission but it takes away the power during acceleration from halt.
The cabin noise is definitely much reduced, but i think the corolla is better noise insulated than lancer...had drove someone else's corolla ...really quieter.
In any way, i have not regretted purchasing the lancer as i think it looks more sporty than corolla and it serves its function as a means of tranportation for me, and has not given my any problems so far.
Other cars you may want to consider is honda civic -- has driven my frens Civic VTI-S 1.7L ....whoa , acceleration is fast and handles well too. Of course, more expensive and consumes more petrol. -

I must admit I am worry abt Thai's Corolla/Vios. Read from some forum which say the value may dip in the future
As I am not that familiar to drive and another driver is new, should we consider <24mths car or COE car? Will not so heart pain if anything (*touchwood*) happens. -
cars are so cheap now, so no point buying second hand as their paper value is just too high......
i think most cars dropped in prices between 2-3k.
i had a hard time choosing between the altis and the vios as the price diff is just 8k.
in the end, i prefer the sporty vios over the spacious altis. its a personal choice as i'm still single and dont have to worry about ppl sitting at the back.
Got a black 1.5E (A) Deluxe. The 2004 model comes with free leather seats. sports rims and full bodykit. managed to convince the sales person to throw in the chrome steering and rear spoiler... all for around 65K.
Don't worry about it being ASSEMBLED in thailand. Quality is still there as parts are still direct from Japan. In future, hondas will also be assembled in thailand..... -

Actually your experience with driving shouldn't severely affect your choice of car... i guess what's most important is to drive carefully yah? Nothing shld happen in that case... and if anything does happen, it'd be an insurance issue rather than a new car/old car issue. A new car is definitely more worth it than a used one, unless you are on a tight budget and would want to get more car (metal/size) for your buck. People used to buy 2nd hand to avoid the mandatory 30% downpayment for new cars. Now that is gone, and also how new car prices have dropped, it's definitely more worth it to get a brand new one.
Made in Thailand shouldn't be a problem, as many forum users have said due to the AFTA, more Japanese manufacturers will be assembling their SEA cars in Thailand. The City/Accord (City is a 5-door Jazz) Vios/Corolla/Camry are built there already. Major parts and the designs still come from Japan, but labour, component, logistics costs are lower.. so why not?
Mazda 323: The replacement model's coming in next year. These are leftover stock the local dealer's trying to clear. It's up to you whether you fing this worth it or not.
Hyundai Matrix: Low price for a 1.6l car... though i reserve my comments on Korean cars, I believe it's under-powered and the rear seats are tad too small.
Nissan Sunny: Another popular car, though I agree with you that the rear looks ugly. It's supposed to consume a lot of petrol, if that's an issue with you. Actually rear drums aren't bad ideas, they are just cheaper than disc brakes.
Proton Wira Avoid at all costs! An early 1990s Lancer and if you are looking for reliabililty, don't look at this car.
Manual or auto? This is really up to personal preference. If you'd like a manual, my advice would be to borrow a manual car and drive it around for one day to gauge the feel. Hah, as for not wanting to drive a manual after using an auto, well it depends on whether you'd want to or not! An auto is definitely easier to drive, but I still prefer manual cars... heh.

If you're buying from C&C, do get from a girl called karen ng. She went for test drive with me, and explained all questions I popped. She didn't get my commission in the end cuz I brought it from my dad's friend, who was an atrocious bastard.
Just tell her your friend who's driving his dad's champhagne coloured merz and bought the lancer 03 black sports cvt recommended.
