SOHC - Single OverHead Cam
D - Double
type of enfine... double is of course betta.... not so much wear and tear... ceteris paribus, a car operating on SOHC will need TWICE as much servicing as a car using DOHC...
Mazda uses DOHC... i think, think only har.... Mitsubishi uses SOHC... so beware...
VVTI - Variable Valve Timing Intelligence...
a technology that maximizes the fuel efficiency and performance of engine of car... so far only toyota have i think...
MAZDA 323 which will be phased out by year end and replaced by MAZDA 3 will have VVT without the intelligence...
this intelligence thing is actually a computer chip... donno what it does also...

Its not true that SOHC cam need twice as much servicing as DOHC. That's nonsense.
I know what's its for but can't really use the correct words. Can someone pls help.
DOHC means two Cam, one for intake and one for exhaust valve, while SOHC uses one cam for both intake and exhaust valve, thus generally slower in nature.
But then, not all DOHC engines are better than SOHC one as there are some not so good one as well. -

Anyway, if you compare for example a Vtec SOHC to some Korea DOHC Engine, I'm sure you will find it a much better SOHC engine. The VVti also comes in SOHC I think, which is also a not bad engine. -
Yah yah it doesn't follow directly that a DOHC engine is better than an SOHC, there are many other factors involved.
Yah Silvercab, there are many engines with both Variable Valve Timing and DOHC... think of the Corolla as an example.
Yah Ah Wei DOHC means double overhead camshaft... two rods over the valves one to control the intake and the other for the exhaust.
SOHC engines use one rod only.
VVT-i is the name for Toyota's variable valve timing technology... basically it changes the timing of the opening and closing of the intake/exhaust valves of the cylinders in the engine. This changes the characteristics of the engine... torque, high end power blah blah won't go into the details...
It goes by other names as well, VANOS (BMW) and VTEC (Honda) and Honda's VTEC is quite different from Toyota's VVT-i.... -
SOHC generally has got better low rev power than DOHC, while DOHC wins in high rev.
