Originally posted by twoti:hi.. i juz bought the altis.. i was also pondering the same question before i bought the toyota.. before it was launched i checked out the usa website on the mazda car.. the exterior look imprssive and interior too.. and it has vvt engine is looks pretty sporty.. but after the lauch of mazda 3 and certain recent reports made me feel that my choice of altis of over mazda 3 is right.. because in my case i am looking for a car which i can drive for a certain period of time.. looking at the reputation of toyota and its recent 'world number 2' win over ford.. its reliable, roomy interior and classy look made the car very much worth the 74k.. i personally test drived the car and felt that it was real smooth and the pick up is not bad. the stering is light and not to mention the braking.. the interior interfaces are not as impressive looking as compared to mazda 3 but it has a mp3 player compared to mazda's 6 disc changer.. and automatic aircon compared to mazda's manual one.. and btw altis's engine is vvt-i.. and additional intelligence.. but i am not sure if it makes any difference.. it really depends if u are a frequent car changer and if u really like a sporty one.. if u are looking for a reliable and smooth driving car.. i would strongly recommand the altis..and btw toyota mentioned that the car was assembled only in thai.. the parts are made in japan and qc is definately from japan... so i must say there might not be much of a quality difference.. (ps. thai is second in the lowest number fo defect rates and guess who is first?? ------> sad to say its turkey
)
Went to Suntec to see Mazda3..The interior is quite small compared to Altis. But the exterior is definitely more sporty than Altis.Originally posted by BrUtUs:should get altis, mazda 3 abit too expensive unless u rich...
wat difference.. but cannot find jap corolla now already ma.. futher more i think altis is longer and wider compared to jap corolla...Originally posted by Toyota_supporter:Well, I got my Altis too but I think Thai and Jap still have a difference, judging from my car alone.see the other altis forum for details

i would like to comment on the point where u said it is used as a taxi in third world country.Originally posted by wowwee2:Hi all,
I am a true Toyota supporter, driving a '00 Corolla now, this is my 3rd Corolla thru the years of driving. I find myself stuck in a situation where the new Corolla Altis is not as good for a replacement, reason being- do they deserve my repeat purchase?
1) Thai-made
2) quality has drop (look at the boot - still using wooden plank and radiator at engine bay is like my old '83 Corolla - totally exposed)
3) Its a taxi in a few 3rd world country, 3 yrs old model - really.
My friend / ex-colleague collected his car 2 weeks ago, however have to go back a week later due to some electrical problem. Some things in the cabin also became lose and about to drop off.
Question : Have anyone faced the similar problems? Do anyone think that i should carry on being a Borneo customer since the business direction is to get current customers to accept down graded cars as replacement?
Since we all share and find value in this discussion, I seek for all opinion.

my humble opinion.. my fren who works in a jap hi-fi firm (along the likes of sony, pioneer, national, etc etc) told me something - he said that japan and asian workmanship will ALWAYS be different..Originally posted by twoti:i would like to comment on the point where u said it is used as a taxi in third world country.
using it as a taxi doesn't mean that the standard of the car is no good.. from a taxi driver's point of view the car must be fuel efficient, durable, comfotable and of course able to drive long distance without breaking down easily. and if they would to choose altis.. this means that the corolla altis has definately met certain standards.. why would singapore's prestige taxis choose mercedes?
quality i believe wouldn't defer much as the car is japan made, but thai assembled.. thailand is merely a strategic base for toyota so as to cater a cheaper price for the customers around southern asia (singapore, malaysia, thailand and bla bla..)
i believe toyota wouldn't put their hard build reputation at stakes, as the a few models are thai assembled..
erm but do u noe the qc and production line system goes according to the japanese style and the qcs are japanese.. and if u are working under a jap firm no matter where u are.. they will take their pride in work.. i have work wif them b4 and i noe how strict they are and how thorugh they check their work.. juz my 2 cents worth.Originally posted by shanhz:my humble opinion.. my fren who works in a jap hi-fi firm (along the likes of sony, pioneer, national, etc etc) told me something - he said that japan and asian workmanship will ALWAYS be different..
this stems from e cultural background. the japs take SUPREME pride in work, and will never bring their troubles and moods to work, ie: the end-product is consistent..
asian workers (read-malaysian, thailand, etc etc), however, are less consistent, and if they happen to just have a quarrel, for example, they will 'anyhow do'...
my fren's conclusion was - he always buys jap made hifi (even from his own company)..
if the above theory applies to cars, you guys have your answer
I totally agreed with Twoti..Originally posted by twoti:i would like to comment on the point where u said it is used as a taxi in third world country.

agreed... i have worked with japs, and i know their standards are rigid (for good and for bad, good in our case)..Originally posted by twoti:erm but do u noe the qc and production line system goes according to the japanese style and the qcs are japanese.. and if u are working under a jap firm no matter where u are.. they will take their pride in work.. i have work wif them b4 and i noe how strict they are and how thorugh they check their work.. juz my 2 cents worth.
The Mazda3 as wirh the Corolla or Nissan are all a saloon car basically. Only that The M3 look sportier than the rest. It has been tested extensively and prove to be very nimble than the others. You must be surprised if i say the 1.6 has better fuel economy than its 2.3 sibling.(refer to http://www.mazda3forums.com). As for the pick-up it is nothing to brag about its about the same with the other 1.6 corolla and Nissan. If you looking to have a good pick-up you should be looking at a true sportster like the Mitsubishi Evo.Originally posted by [3Dd|E]™:As wat i have been told in Mazda showroom , the body of mazda3 seem to be too heavy for a 1.6L engine so the pickup from 1st to 2nd gear will be quite slow but it will incress in the power when it reach it 3rd gear. As for the rating from the european , wat i can say is dat , we cant really compare their Mazda3 to ours as they are having a 2.3L engine in it , so it make a big diff in the fuel saving part n the power in pick up.
