it's not timed based on the speed the drivers change the gears.
it's timed based on the time the car takes to reach 100km/h from a standstill. some cars are available in both manual and automatic transmission. the automatic transmission cars are generally slower than the manual cars in acceleration, so, the manufacturers will provide separate times (and tests) for the different transmissions.
think wat he's trying to say is how is the timing obtained?? coz different drivers have different driving 'styles' and gear shift speed-change, so if you want get driver A to drive, he might get, say, 8sec for the century sprint, but driver B might achieve 7.8 sec, for example.
so he's asking what's the basis for the timing?
