I need some driving tips here. For example, how to change gear smoothly and how to drive straight? Because I tend to drive in a zigzag manner and jerk when changing gear. Thanks for your help.

um....
try to change your gear slower.
be gentle on the clutch, take a few seconds longer to release it.
always keep your eyes on the road, and try to make sure u adjust the wheel constantly with minute, precise motions.
be relaxed, do not tense up on the wheel, hold it lightly, and look far ahead.
btw, u're still learning right? -
bro, i guess u are still learning hw to drive. dats wad happen to me when i oso juz learn driving.
maintain ur focus on the road, while changing gear, dun look at the gear. see forward. and while clutching in, dun jam the clutch... depress it smoothly... relax... gear in liao release clutch slowly... -
muz train your left and right hands to do different things at the same time. ur left hand is moving to shift gears whilst your right hand is trying to keep the steering steady. tendency is for you to concentrate on doing one thing and neglect the other and vice versa. just try alternating between slapping your thighs with one hand and rubbing them (your own pls, not on gals
) with the other and you'll realize the prob.
can try juz keep your right hand "stiff" and making it "useless" when you shifting. learn how to make shifting a subconscious task by feeling the gears and not look at them. once you get the hang of doing both at the same time, you're ok.

tailslide is right. Your eye must not try to look at the gear knob. You need to pratice the feeling of changing gear. All eye, hand, leg and body must cordinate.
One tips on feeling the gear change: Why not after you started your engine, before move off, try to pratice on gear changing 1st.
look straight, just your hand and leg moving. Dreaming of you are driving now.
i used to do that, -
you can shift gear as fast as a professional driver without jerking the gearbox.
do not put your heel on the floor while releasing the clutch.
use your knee power to control your clutch and you may release the clutch as fast as you could without jerking the gearbox.
somehow u cant stop the car from jerking if u r going fast or going reving hard.
due to the momentum of the car.
try to release at a constant speed for the beginning.
do not release abit than stop than release abit.
alot of ppl tend to do this.
when u release jus release all the way but not to let go immediately also.
learn from neutral, jus release your leg all the way.
try it dude.
i am sure u will be a happy man.
steering wise has to practice on your own. -
I'm not a good driver, but this is how I learn.
ok, first things first.
Throttle control: depress your accelerator until your rpm(free/neutral gear) reach around 2500, then let go. Try not to look at the tachcometer while practicing, get use to the engine sound. Repeat until u get use to it.
Moving the car: depress your clutch fully, engage 1st gear, depress accelerator until your rpm reach around 2500, very slowly release your clutch until you feel the car starts to move a little. Release(slowly) the clutch more to go faster. Repeat until you get use to it. note: don't hold the steering wheel too tightly, just place your hands there will do.
Steering: hands at 10 - 2 position @ the steering wheel. When steering, try not to look at the steering wheel, feel you way through the bend/turn/corner/hairpin/u-turn. Use crosshand method when you need to turn more. Look at the direction you wan to turn at all times. Repeat until you get use to it.
Shifting up gear: While moving, depress clutch fully, release accelerator completely, relax your right hand(just rest on the steering wheel will do), left hand shift to desired gear, depress the accelerator until rpm reach around 2500, slowly release the clutch until you can feel the car going a little faster, release more to go faster/need more power. Do all of these actions with you eyes glued to road in front. Repeat until you get use to it.
Shifting down gear: Depress brake(right foot) slowly until you can feel the car slowing down, depress clutch fully(left foot), relax your right hand(just rest on the steering wheel will do), left hand shift to desired gear, slowly release the clutch until you can feel the car going a little more slower(engine braking effect), slowly depress the accelerator until desired speed. Do all of these actions with you eyes glued to road in front. Repeat until you get use to it.
All of the above must be done with your eyes on the road in front, try not to look at any of the meters(unless checking for speed), steering wheel and gear stick. note: if you release the clutch or depress the accelerator too quickly(especially 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear), the car will jerk violently, and it'll look ugly from the outside.

a smooth gear change = save fuel... (Read it in a mag somewhere) -

i still remember my first driving lesson, to guide the car to go straight, dont try to steer, automatically, the car actually goes straight, only when we try to steer does the vehicle go zig zag... try driving slowly and not to hold to steering wheel to get what i mean... please DO NOT do that on the main road...
regarding changing gear, always dont panic, be confident and practise more... -

The fundementals to make car move smoothly is more on 1st & 2nd gear, if tis 2 smooth, 3,4,5 gear wil be ok.
If can try to take out ur shoes to drive, if in NS take ou rthe boots, u wil hv more feel on how much pressure u r depressing the acc & releasing te clutch.
For me, i drove when i was 16 father teach, in malaysia lah...in singapore basic 2 time, final 5 time,al never study,but when driving 1 time to get liecent.i take private only $870 everything. some may tink i big hole cos of less den $1k, but is bcos i know how to drive already mah...
1st, dun kan jiong,relax,smooth changing of gear actually easy, u dun see it in te hard way, split up the process in ur mind,feel there is te biting point or if leg no feeling, divide it into 3 parts, step clutch, put in gear 1,release clutch til 1/3,step abit of acc,den u move ur leg up slowley,jus lik pamper ur gf lik tat,dun suddenly release, car wil jerk.,den step acc down more,should be no problem, i learn this not from my dad but from a tester tat pass me, be more brave,once u get the hang of it,eg, step how much acc, where is the part(close to biting point,haven biting point) on te clutch, den should be no problem.Hv confidence in urself, getting to pass is actually not diffcult, its jus how u see the way u r driving. -
