manual transmission only! haha... guess u should take note on engaging the correct gear for the speed... unsuitable gear results in too high rev which spoils the engine, or too low rev which strains the engine...Originally posted by Axl:if u're not in a hurry and riding on the highway...
this is what i do...
on flat and downward sloping roads... i'll switch to neutral gear and let the car free wheel until speed has drop below acceptable levels... then i engage gear again...
question is: am i exposing myself to any risks of any kind?
yes u are...Originally posted by Axl:if u're not in a hurry and riding on the highway...

not true about manual cars what....auto cars also got a N (neutral) gear right?Originally posted by Axl:yes... this tip only apply to manual cars.... if auto cars you can still do it lah... just switch off the engine lor...
to counter the no engine brake risk, maybe i can just clutch in.... this will gimme quick access to engine brake...
other than no engine brake, any other potential problems driving like that???
yeah, i know some people who use an auto car like a manual... like they start from 1, then 2 then DOriginally posted by jiayong:not true about manual cars what....auto cars also got a N (neutral) gear right?

free gear is very dangerous...esp if anything happens u won't have any engine brake...and thatz very dangerous wor...

free wheeling is letting ur wheels roll freely without any gear engaged.Originally posted by slikpizz:on thing i don't understand... hope to gain more knnowledge....is freewheeling really dangerous cos no engine brake??? some cars can do that but it's not encouraged to shift from R to any other gear(D, L, 2, 1, S, etc) while moving.Originally posted by slikpizz:how abt changing to nuetral gear for auto car?
will shifting the gear from N back to D while the vehicle is moving cause any engine defect?
hahahahaha go public~!! save the most!Originally posted by ak6210:if you want to drive ,dun save

of course smoothly without the engine braking... and as risky as the near frictionless ice-skating ring, where u'll be dying for friction when u need to stop immediately...Originally posted by aj_2009:i always do free wheeling... but i dun think it dangerous.now i know...i will try to change.
but will i let go my car go freely,i feel the car go more smoothly.
you don't get it.Originally posted by Sir_Horny:how come my manual car when i do free wheeling i can still use the brake? i've been doing it all the time n i m still able to brake while in free gear
