  can anyone tell me what is overdrive in an auto car?my dad's car overdrive is automatically on when i start the engine.

  The overdrive upshifts to a higher gear for u when the coresponding rpm is reached.
  
  Thus if u press the button to turn O/D off. Then you will be able to drag your gear more and it allows you to reach the max torque of the car thus giving more power.
  
  Pple sometimes use it(OD off) when overtaking cars but of course its not at fuel economy as compared to with OD on.

  simply put ..... turning on OD is enabling the final gear for your car's auto transmission
  
  turn it off and your auto transmission will not use the final gear
  
  you will understand the concept if you understand a manual transmission car. why higher fuel consumption? try using only up to 4th gear for a manual transmission car (even on the highway) and you will understand ...
  
  or, if you have the luxury of a 6th gear, use only the 1st 5 gears ....

  with OD, you'll save more fuel. but, it depends on the driving habits of the driver and it will only come into use if you travel at speeds where the final gear will come into use

  try this.. go on expressway...
  1. with o/d on.. floor ur accl till 100 kph..
  2. press "nos" lolz..
  3. see the effect... hee..
  4. stop car... cos TP behind u...lolz
  
  ok la.. overdrive means using the last gear of ur auto car.
  off it means u wont use the last gear..

  quick qn.....which type of car has the "overdrive" installed in them??
  never seen one b4.....and any chance of installing it on my car??

  it comes with your automatic gearbox ..... if it's there, it's there
