also have to look at the way u drive it.Originally posted by swordsman_Lu:I also learnt that we should look at fuel consumption spec. with the right perspective. Usually what is claimed is under certain (optimised?) conditions. If you are driving in the cities, ha, you've got to pay more for fuel. Worse if your car is heavier, or a petrol-drinker.
hmm get your engine checked maybe? could be some manufacturing faultOriginally posted by hlg:True. Will take all the advises into consideration. Do not think I drive like a F1 driver, and I do not drive in the city too much as I stay and work in live in the west; dun think I encounter too much start-stop driving.
Still 9km/litre is really way too high. Fuel so expensive here, it is really burning a big hole in my pocket
I am getting 9km/l too and I am 3rd week driving the optra. the mechanic also told me that once Syn Oil chnage it will improve. are you using RON 92 or 98 ?Originally posted by hlg:I just got an Optra a couple of months ago. I am getting a fuel consumption of about 9km per litre which is very high for a 1.6 litre car.
Anyone facing this problem with their Optra?
Shell 92 or 98 ?Originally posted by johncooper:Use Shell petrol ... Better mileage ... serious ... me sunny fc is 9.5km/l and i am usually heavy footed, but now with my king kong weighted foot it inceased to 11.2km/l on average ... so why not give it a shot ... no harm trying Shell rite?

He also said maybe can tune the engine to run more lean i.e. more air, less fuel to further improve the FC. He also offered to replace my tyres back to 14" (I am having 15" sports rim which according to him, drinks more fuel).
Since I am not the only one with this high FC, it is probably a manufacturer design issue, and/or they have misrepresented their FC performance specs in their brochures (which claims that the car is capable of 14.something for highway driving, 8.something for city, and average is 11.something).
See if we can do anything about it.
How to tune the engine more lean, i,e take more air and less fuel ? Sure can be done ?
well 8 for city driving is about right, and we are in the city aren't we?Originally posted by hlg:Made some noise with the distributor, and the General Manager met up with me. and hotter is not good for the engine.Originally posted by hlg:In the brochure, it says 14km/lit for Urban driving, and 8km/lit for Extra Urban driving (with traffic jams??). Do not really know how they define Urban and Extra Urban. But at the time of my decision to buy the car, the salesperson told me I should be getting 11km/lit.
As for the lean fuel tuning, according to them, if tuned more air and less fuel, the engine will run hotter.
Anybody try grounding for the optra, can teach me how to do it ?Originally posted by HENG@:and hotter is not good for the engine.

don't think soOriginally posted by american idol:Anybody try grounding for the optra, can teach me how to do it ?
make sure the brochure is in km/l and not mpg.Originally posted by hlg:Wondering if the distributor is overstating the FC specs in their brochures..... is this misrepresentation on their part, or are we technical ignorant and are misinterpreting the specs?
Fuel is ?*&%$? expensive here in Singapore, and is a major operating cost in car usage, and if this is the FC we will be getting for the rest of the life of the car, then we need to resolve this issue...
