Dunno my way round...

  Please dun laugh at me... but i really dun know my way round the roads... All seems so similar... So many expressway... wat CTE, SLE, TPE, etc...
  
  I love sleepin in my dad's car whenever he drive... Once he start the car... Off to dreamland.. Zzzzzz, only will wake up when we reach... coz didn't expect tat when i grow up, will tak an interest to learn drivin...
  
  Been sleepin till i finally wanna tak up my licence at 18, then start to wake up n see see the roads... But too late leh! Really can't seems to get my roads!
  
  Now slightly better abit... coz tat time learnin drivin, my inst told me to go round n round in circle.... but i still can miss the turn n need him to guide thru out...
  
  Sometimes my dad tell me bout the road till he want tu xue liao! And coz of tis, both parents so dun allow me drive alone... At least for another 2 yrs!!!
  
  I can mistok Thomsom plaza as Sembawang shoppin center... coz the both look the same too me! If i see the first road sign eg, put jurong, which i wanna go... i surely turn into it... Kena stop my dad... say is another one... says depends on which part u want go... But to me, all the same...
  
  Haha... Very pai seh liao la... Can anyone tell me how can know the roads better not? Dun ask me drive more, coz my dad needs to be wif me! N he is workin so... v busy... Even if the map is upside down, i wouldn't know the diff!

  Alamak ... don't you look at the roads when you take Bus or taxi ... try to take bus when you are free ... that helps alot ... (at least it helps me)
  
  when young my ah kong always take me on bus rides .. one inter change to another ... so i naturally remember alot of roads ... so my ambition ... TAXI DRIVER!!!

  Agreed. Bus rides can help one in memorising the roads.

  There is one posting quite similar to your situation.... dun worry with more driving experience you will learn..... just remember my golden rule... when in doubt just go straight.... cos u sure to find an expressway one .....

  what if he at punggol ... exited from TPE ... Go straight to punggol end ??? or lim chu kang go straight is a very ulu jetty ...

  read. the . signs.
  
  learn routes by road names first rather than landmarks
  although landmarks are useful, it's easy to get them confused because of poor explanation
  road names are much more precise
  
  really sit up and take notice of your surroundings because observation is the best way of learning roads
  and practice your familiar routes first, like home to work, home to town
  once you're sure of them, then learn another route to somewhere further
  learn to read a map - it's not that difficult really

  Can emphatize with u...i taking delievery of my car 2 weeks later..and think i only know the way from home to work..from home to town...and....hey think thatz all leh...haha

  hey, guess wat pal! dat was my ambition too! i always tot it will be damn nice to be driving ard listening to radio and earn a living at the same time! ^5!

  I always look at landmarks...Buildings...Big advertisements....certain colourful structure....easier to recall the route......

  start to know the road from your place to some place you usually go... help is available at www.streetdirectory.com just key in your add or postal code and destination add or postal code and hit the take me there button and it will give details on how to get there step by step....... Hope it helps

  i tried tis b4.... but somehow it din get me to my destination.... the directions werent very clear.... but its really detailed.... mayb can give it a try....
  
  i go by landmarks n bus routes.... but dat will mean i will miss the car park entrance..... ehehe.... not driving at the moment but always help my frens to find directions when they r driving.... so i guess in some ways it will help when i collect my new car!

  Street directory online is useful for maps.
  
  The route finder program isn't very smart. Sometimes they give you the longer way instead of a direct one. But still a useful tool when you're clueless.

  Hahaha i thought that i was the only one who have this ambition! but its damn tough i heard from taxi drivers ... its very tire-ing to drive almost the whole day and earn little ..
  
  and you've got to take the singapore route test, and most prob i will fail ... they asks question like where is where is Jalan Ismail, Jalan Pisang or even Jalan ahmad ...

  i think the best way to know singapore is to take Taxi and remember the routes the taxi uncle take ... that should be wise

  hm... you know what? i have quite a similar problem as you. but once i've been to the same place more than once i'll be able to remember the route. just recently, to drive up to orchard road i drove past queensway.... i think i went halfway around singapore to reach there already... coz i missed the CTE exit on PIE and didnt know how to make my way back there.
  
  anyone one thing for sure is that even if you cant find the place you want, don't worry, just go straight and u-turn. lol. i did more u-turns than i ever imagined trying to find my way around. another thing is to always keep your composure. coz i find that there are times where you can keep missing alot of exits until you grow very pek cek. the important thing is to keep your cool and maintain your driving composure. don't let missing exits affect you.
  
  anyway i doubt it's because of your road knowledge that your dad don't allow you to drive alone. my parents know i dont know much of the roads around but they let me drive alone coz they know i drive safe. not knowing your roads is not an excuse not to drive alone in singapore. hahaha. you can't get lost here, just takes more time to travel from one place to another.it's really okay to spend abit more petrol for this sort of experience.
  
  maybe you can try to recall the path you took once you reach your destination, this might help u remember it better.
  
  oh yeah, usually i have music in the car so i don't really mind if i miss exits unless i'm rushing for time. haha.

  Been to town only a few times?? hmmm....that sounds strange..hee
  Anyway, i only know the way to major landmarks like Taka, Suntec....think have to trial and error sometimes...have to admit i'm very poor with road recognition..and a blur driver..
  
  Hope heaven protect me from all possible mishaps..haha
  Never went up Takashimaya car park before as not too confident whether i can go thru the slopes "unhurt"..sigh...only pray that time will sharpen my skills etc etc

  Usually what newer drivers will do will be to explore the outskirts of Singapore first, like those less congested areas to get the feel of driving and gain more confidence in negotiating road conditions. Then when you are more sure of how to deal with road situations then move on to town, where the roads are more congested. Good luck in your driving I also think it's better to drive in suburbs first lah, cos the traffic is light, affords you the time to miss exits and able to turn back without fuss
