How to improve torque and power

I drive a MK4 Golf, and I want increase torque, and fuel consumption is not a top priority. Any suggestions from car experts here? Thanks.

Try BSR ECU re-tuning kit. Chk it out @ www.swedesport.net They cater for SAAB, Volvo, Volkswagen ECUs. Cost is about $1600. Can also try performance iridium spark plugs, be sure to select the correct plug for your engine. Can visit Denso's website to choose the correct plug for your engine.
High flow K&N air filter and remus exhaust. The above ahould give u a marked improvement in performance.

Try adding in a HKS turbo and a shot of NOS too

Thanks everyone for tips. I'm a new driver, so really nutty about all these tech talk. I have heard about air filter and spark plugs, but NOS and turbo ECU??? Are these legal? I dun mind spending on my car but not to the govt.....

a) Modification are mostly illegal
b) boosting of power come at a price, not just for the parts you are installing, but the life span of your car
c) what is the point of having a powerful car that is not reliable
d) A golf is a german made car, and not many people in Singapore really knows how to repair it and parts are expensive (considering the Euro exchange rate)
e) if you sent your heavily modified car to the local agent, it is likely that they will not know how to rectify the problem since there are some many "foreign" parts in there, and likely the programe in the CPU will be in a mess and they will have to reset it.
f) Continental cars buyer would generally prefer the car to be as original as possible. So not advisable to mess it up.
If you need more power, i would suggest that your change your MK4 to a GTi version. -

that's a sensible point.....I heard spark plugs and air filter are legal. Do they really do the job of boosting power? My Golf is near 3 years old......fyi. -

if u want GTi performance, get a GTi lor...

if u increase the HP greatly, some parts are gonna give.. u might also wanna think about ur brakes.. sure u can go fast.. can u slow down in time too? keke.. -

change air filter.. consider a cold air intake mod.. tht might improve power and fuel consumption.. as for turbos, they have to be sent for approval with lta.. or else it will be illegal.. another is to feed yr car with high quality petrol, e.g. vpower... improves performance slightly..

Change the plug n air filter for better response should do the trick. Dont try the system got it?
Really wanna race go to a track. Dont see a point winning in street race unless there is a wage (Above $5k). Consider being caught in action, license revoked, car compounded, heavy fined.
Just my own opinion.

I think they do, but the question is by how much? I used to drive a A3 before, which is pretty much the same car, and I didnt have any complain about the car. If I were you, I wont border to do that, would rather put the money in a better hifi system or a MP3 player. -

The fact of the matter is that NA cars need to rev A LOT to get any semblance of power. For those NA cars with high power/torque like Hondas and BMWs, the basic engine has been tweaked to deliver cam phase/change etc and/or with huge engine cc.
You can spend tonnes of dosh on the car to get it up to scratch but with only minimal gains. Here are some of them (not all are necessarily legal!)
Air intake mods
- Cold Air or Short Ram
Exhaust mods
- free-er flow muffler... I'd recommend Supersprint to Remus based on feedback from most owners. Not too sure if ABT/Oettinger exos have been approved by LTA
- extractor (equal length better breathing)
- sports catalytic converter
Transmission mods
- if you are using an Auto transmission, try looking for a torque converter with higher stalling speed.
Engine block mods
-port polish
-reinforced pistons
-valve springs
but these should be added in conjunction with an ECU upgrade (preferably programmable)
Since you are a Volks owner, try heading to VAGSG.com. There's a wealth of expertise in VAG cars there.
To be honest, it may be more cost effective changing the car
Keeping it in the same family, you can look at the A3 1.8T, the Golf 1.8T (Mk IV) or the upcoming Golf V with 2.0FSI Turbo
