No need to attend course to make the switch. Just remember a few things:Originally posted by Newdriver:As you all know, getting a driving licence in Sin is damn expensive and worst, must learn using manual cars. So how do you people change from manual to auto cars after obtaining yr licence? Do you need to go for refresher course to do the switch? I was told driving auto cars is like driving a toy car. I just hare having to change gears especially cornering and on slopes. Thanks.
creep forward like as when u are engaging half-clutch is it? then if i apply brake, the engine won't stall like manual does?Originally posted by s|nNeD:u dun even have to change gears at all for auto...
just step and relase the accelerator when necessary...
no need for any conversion but just be reminded that once u lift your foot off the brakes, it will slowly creep forward...
yeah easier said than done. i still need to know more about auto coz driving manual u need to clutch in first, engage 1st gear then half clutch and acc to move off. wif auto, no need to clutch in and then feel like my left foot 'bo cho kang' leh!Originally posted by HENG@:very easy. simply switched from day one.
wah, now u make me more scared liao. choose wrong gear + step on acc = disaster!Originally posted by tkw88:No need to attend course to make the switch. Just remember a few things:
1) Always step on the brake when shifting between Park-Reverse-Drive. Most if not all auto gear should have safety feature that does not allow you to move out of Park unless the brake pedal is depressed.
2) Visually check; either indicator on dash or gear itself; that you have selected the right gear (R or D) -- choose wrong gear + step on accelerator = disaster.
3) You cannot push start auto gear.
4) As mentioned by another contributor, auto gear car creeps forward when D is engaged. The speed varies from make to make, but usually quite slow.
5) Use right foot for both accelerator and brake pedals. Left foot can rest on foot rest.
Switching from manual to auto gear not difficult, you will get use to it real fast.
Most challenging: driving rental manual gear left-hand drive cars overseas, imagine changing manual gear with right hand and driving on the other side.
1,2 for steep slope... manual car also have such feature mah... to give ur car an extra booast when drive up steep slopes.Originally posted by digicharat:auto?
wah lao! no need lah.
i let my friend who had no license drive he also can do it man. somemore that is the 1st time he touching the wheel and he is able to drive around liao.
just know that D = drive
R = reverse
P = park
1, 2, N = u dun need to know about it. u wont touch it anyway.
i basically dun use 1, 2, N. too troublesome liao. hahaha.Originally posted by xian89:1,2 for steep slope... manual car also have such feature mah... to give ur car an extra booast when drive up steep slopes.
N gear- some ppl wun use tat. juz use to "free" ur gear when ur car stop at traffic lights so u wun step on ur brake for too long.
last.... ur friend sibey heong... u were lucky he din send ur car to the repair shop

only one lesson on auto but not enuff leh. i guess u must drive it more often in order to get the hang of it. i just passed so confused how to switch fm manual. during my lessons, i kept clutching in until damn scared and left foot numbed.Originally posted by HENG@:really? but its done already. anyways u din get any autocar lessons?
the whole trick is to remember to step on the brakes if u want the car to stay still, and everything else will sort itself out.
aiyoh like that har!....chum liao.....i'm used to applying engine brake first then foot brake.Originally posted by altis183:something for you...i find that on auto cars the brake are not as good.there are no engine brakes...so always break early till you get used to the braking distance...
well i only have auto cars at home so from day 1 i had to use auto. in fact i dun find it a problem switching to auto at all.Originally posted by Newdriver:only one lesson on auto but not enuff leh. i guess u must drive it more often in order to get the hang of it. i just passed so confused how to switch fm manual. during my lessons, i kept clutching in until damn scared and left foot numbed.
its not hard. but, its true that its easier to get into accidents for auto.Originally posted by eveningstar:Well, I was told that it is hard to drive the auto car and get into accidents more easily. Like the geylang accident, wah...because it is driving auto car and gotten into accident as it is hard to drive and not used to it.

heng, u sound like an expert on cars. why is it easier to get into accidents for auto? is it the braking system or the complacency of driving a 'toy' car? just tis morning i witnessed an accident along hougang towards ang mo kio. a civic 'kissed' the backside of a pick-up and its whole bonnet was jutted out whilst the pick-up only had a slight dent. so does it mean the civic drove too fast and braked too hard and too late?Originally posted by HENG@:its not hard. but, its true that its easier to get into accidents for auto.
actually, one reason is, like u said, simply becos it can get too relaxing to drive an auto car, and becoome careless. Also, it can be easy to forget to step on the brakes while the car is stationary, instead of holding the clutch in in a manual car.Originally posted by Newdriver:heng, u sound like an expert on cars. why is it easier to get into accidents for auto? is it the braking system or the complacency of driving a 'toy' car? just tis morning i witnessed an accident along hougang towards ang mo kio. a civic 'kissed' the backside of a pick-up and its whole bonnet was jutted out whilst the pick-up only had a slight dent. so does it mean the civic drove too fast and braked too hard and too late?
