actually u should depress the button when u r pulling up ur hand brake... otherwise the handbrake may be damaged...

Yes, you should press the button and pull the handbrake or when releasing it.
The click click is only useful to check if you need to send your car for handbrake servicing.
If you hear more than 5 clicks before your handbrake is effective, then its time to send for servicing. After servicing, there should be 3 click and not less or it means the handbrake is too tight, which means the rear tyres is not free to spin fully and will affect the car perfomance and damage the tyres.
