Accident: Van Burst into Flames

Saw in the news last night, about a van ( looks like VW ) bursting into flames after hitting a tree at Ang Mo Kio Ave 5.
I had a glimps of what was in the back of van; looks to me like cans of paint. It also appears that the fire only engulfed upper part of vehicle, which means fire could not have come from petrol tank. Most fortunate the fuel tank was not affected by fire, otherwise, there wouldn't be ANY chance of survival.
My Question is: what caused the fire? Paint/thinner or fuel tank?
Usually a frontal impact does not cause a fire to break out. Unless faulty fuel system. -

SINGAPORE : A man and woman were badly burnt when their minivan burst into flames after crashing into a tree.
The accident happened near the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 around 2pm on Tuesday.
Just minutes earlier, the minivan was engulfed in flames, and a female passenger was trapped in the vehicle.
The driver, though hurt, managed to escape.
One eyewitness said, "I saw the burning, the fire. The girl was shouting. It's really really sad because the fire (was) so big...at one occasion when they tried to pull her, she shouted in pain."
Another added, "The man (was) also burn(t), the leg and the hand (could not move), (he could just) just lie down only...but the man (was) already out, and then the girl (was) still stuck inside because of her leg...stuck with the seat."
Eyewitnesses also said that bystanders tried to help pull the female passenger out, but the flames made it impossible to rescue her.
Several workers from a nearby construction site also rushed to the scene with fire extinguishers.
The driver suffered second degree burns over 40 percent of his body, while his female passenger suffered second and third degree burns over 60 percent of her body.
Both were taken to the Singapore General Hospital and the cause of the fire is being investigated. - CNA -

the degree...how come the driver 40% is second degree n the woman
60% is second n third degree....?or is it my mistake??? -

Say for example, hot water scalded will have huge body surface area injured (high number %) but superficial wounds (first degree/sunburn), however if in contact with hot iron for a couple of min, would be small burn area (lower %) but becomes a2/3rd degree burn.
