The BEAMS engine stands for Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System. It is currently deployed on the Altezza RS200 and its quite magical as it surpasses the magical 100bhp per litre mark without resorting to forced induction. The 3S GE BEAMS engine works hand in hand with the DUAL VVTi system. Dual refers to the system being deployed on both inlet and exhaust camshafts. Which explains why the RS200 is a joy to drive after 4500 rpm.
The BEAMS engine is also used in the Celica though its not emblazoned across the engine covers. The 1ZZFE and 2ZZGE utilise a single system, unlike the 3S GE engines. However, the 2ZZGE engines comes equipped with VVTLi which give it a little shove in the back feeling more like the BMW Vanos rather than the VTEC.
