I'm an exchange student for August 2012 at NTU which is VERY far from the city. I'll have 3 days of lectures only. Should I find accomodation near NTU at Jurong where the facilities are nicer and more comfortable and there is a dense student population - OR - should I find accomodation in the city at somewhere like Pearl Hill Hostel where facilities aren't so nice but it's near Chinatown and the city and I won't have to travel far to explore on my 4 days off?
Also, does anyone know how high the academic standard is at NTU faculty of computer engineering?
Many thanks :)
find a place to stay at jurong west or pioneer road, which is very near to NTU. There are a lot of rooms for rental at that area.
Tampines or Pasir Ris. Or Punggol. There are undergraduates who stay here and travel daily to and fro.
1 Most students don't move to be nearer to school, they commute. You won't have a large student population except in NTU itself.
2 The train and bus commute from the city to Jurong is horrible. I suggest living in Jurong or NTU itself to spare yourself a horrible commute. And timing your visits to the city to avoid rush hour.
you'll have to know the queue for bus 179 in the morning...
I remember during one of the semester, an exchange student from Germany stay with me.
I think they do provide campus hostel room for exchange program student. Please check out with the school if they provide free lodging for you.
It is very hard to get a room in Singapore. The cost is $650 per month for a small room in the non-city area.

The academic standard should be easy for you. A normal engineering student takes 8 to 10 subjects per semester. And you only having 3 lectures.
Great, thanks a lot this is all very helpful advice. Looks like I should stay near NTU.
Lokey - I did apply for on-campus accomodation but I didn't get a spot =( I'm looking at getting a small room for SG$650/month around the Lakeside area now. I think I've decided I'll need a room to myself rather than room-share with 3 others.
That's great news for me about the academic standard! I don't know any programming languages but am doing post-grad computing courses. Gives some hope to me passing =D
