Circle Line's art works to reach out to more Singaporeans
SINGAPORE: Final preparations are being made to the Circle Line
which opens on 28 May. While parts of the five-station stretch between
Bartley and Marymount may look familiar, other details are sure to be
worth a second look.
A wall at the Bartley station is entirely made out of nearly
160,000 discontinued one-cent coins. It is among the six
competition-winning artworks and 22 commissioned pieces commuters will
see along the Circle Line.
All stations along the Circle Line network will feature public art components as part of its 'Art in Transit' programme.
Unlike the works at the North East Line stations, which cost some S$6.7 million, these pieces are by younger artists.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) hopes they will help create a more dynamic travelling experience for commuters.
Andrew Mead, senior design manager, architecture, LTA, said: "It's very
important that they can come into the station and see artworks that
they can immediately resonate with and relate to. And also works that
they can come through and see time and time again."
One such example is a piece by four-man design collective - "Yoma
and A Dose of Light". It depicts a satirical map of Singapore complete
with cultural references done with tongue firmly in cheek.
Young Ding Li, design collective member, 'Yoma and A Dose of Light',
said: "It's meant to also serve as an archive that combines and
condenses a little bit of our culture, our nature, our nationhood and
all the various nitty gritty details we know about Singapore."
The Circle Line's 'Art in Transit' programme costs a total of S$4.8
million and includes Art Seats that will be installed at all
interchange station platforms at Dhoby Ghaut, Paya Lebar, Serangoon,
Bishan, Buona Vista and HarbourFront. - CNA/vm
Closely-located tunnels among challenges faced in building Circle Line
Attention to detail is what ensures the stations on the Circle Line Network will run smoothly.
With less than two weeks to go before the opening of the five-station stretch between Bartley and Marymount, engineers said the journey to get to this point was a long one filled with many challenges.
Among those difficulties was extracting 500 reinforced concrete and steel foundation structures called piles.
But troubles for the construction team didn't end there. Tunnels had to be built close to each other so the team had to exercise extreme precision or risk collapsing active train tunnels.
For one 200-metre stretch, tunnels were located just 2.5 metres apart when they are usually about six metres apart.
Tan Kian Thong, Circle Line director, Land Transport Authority, said: “For construction of a station over at Marymount, we encountered rock at fairly high levels. And we had to use explosives to break up this rock, in order to progress downward."
The Electrical and Mechanical engineering team won't have it easy either. One of the hurdles for them is to integrate all the stations in the network as it opens up stage by stage.
Ong Boon Ann, electrical & mechanical director, CCL, Land Transport Authority, said: "During the initial part of testing and commissioning, when we are able to move the trains in automatic mode, the train stops at the station platform. However when the train door opens, the passenger doors don't open."
But they said their troubles will all be worth once the stations run smoothly when fully operational.

Round the Circle Line - May 28
CIRCLE Line trains will start rolling in two weeks, with the first five stations set to open their doors on May 28.
The estimated 55,000 commuters who will use the service daily can expect trains to run at a frequency of one every three minutes to four minutes during peak hours.
Besides serving residents and several nearby schools in areas such as Marymount and Lorong Chuan, the stations will also showcase works by local artists.
For now, seven three-car trains will ply the 5.7km stretch during rush hour.
More trains will come on board when the remaining 24 stations in the Circle Line open to the public from next year onwards.
On Thursday, The Straits Times took an eight-minute train ride from Bartley to Marymount and checked out each of the five stations.

northbound platform
more or less completed, but aircon still wasn't on when i was there. infrastructure looks ready but was stuffy due to the lack of proper ventilation
unpaid area concourse
more or less completed too. notice they have covered up the vertical pillars supporting the roof, to make it into a more aesthetically pleasing cylindrical shape
new CCL entrance, adjacent to bus interchange
seen from a distance. there are many empty fields in the area, which are likely to be developed at a later stage
