New road in Bukit Panjang saves travelling time for residents
SINGAPORE: It cost about S$1.4 million and took 10 months to construct.
But this short new road, stretching just 160 metres, in Bukit Panjang New Town is now expected to greatly alleviate the traffic woes of residents in the area.
Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister and MP for the area, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, officiated a short ceremony to open the new road, Senja Way.
This road will now provide an alternative route to the Kranji Expressway.
It is expected to alleviate the traffic congestion that currently occurs in the Bukit Panjang Plaza area at the junctions of Bukit Panjang Road and Woodlands Road.
Mohd Ishak Kasmani, a resident in Bukit Panjang, says: "It takes us 10 to 15 minutes just to get through Bukit Panjang Ring Road near Bukit Panjang Road every morning, especially during normal school days.”
Another resident, Jennifer Huang, says that the new road will definitely cut travelling time because she can get to Bukit Timah directly.
Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of the North-West CDC, says: "Actually we have been studying the traffic flow in Bukit Panjang Town for quite a number of years because the town was growing at a fast pace over the last 10 years.
"For the new town area, which is basically the Cashew Division, this side hasn't got an alternative exit. So Senja Way will provide an exit and entrance point for residents."
Traffic management officials at the Land Transport Authority have estimated that with the opening of this new road, residents in this area should be able to shave at least 5 to 10 minutes off their travelling time. - CNA/so
