Do You KnoW?1973-The three bus companies were further merged to form Singapore Bus Service (SBS).
1974 -Bus lane was introduced.
Designated bus lanes have improved bus speeds by at least 15%.
1977-First Double Decker in Singapore.
1982-MRT railway was given the green light
1983-Trans-Island Bus Services Limited (TIBS) became Singapore's 2nd public bus operator
1984-First air conditioned public bus.
1987-Mass Rapid Transit started operations.
- Trans Island Bus Services Aqquired Singapore Shuttle Bus (css).
1991-TransitLink launched a common stored-value farecard for use on both bus and rail. The card also allowed commuters to enjoy rebates when making transfers.
1996-MRT network extended to link up Yishun and Choa Chu Kang with the Woodlands Extension
-Bendy buses was used in TIBS fleet. Its carrying capacity is 144, highest among the fleet of all public bus operators.
1999-Bukit Panjang LRT system, Singapore's 1st feeder rail system, started operations
2001-The first station to be built on an operating line in Singapore is Dover Station.
Situated between the Buona Vista and Clementi stations on the existing East West Line, the station serves the students and staff of Singapore Polytechnic, and residents in the area.
-SBS evolved to become as SBS Transit Ltd.
The new name, introduced in 2001, reflected SBS Transit's role as a multi-modal operator of bus, MRT and LRT.
-Trans Island Merged with SMRT and become a subsidary of SMRT.
2002-The ez-link card system replaces the magntic card. The system automatically calculates and deducts fares from the card's stored value, and enables commuters to board the buses and pass through MRT fare gates faster.
-Changi AirPort extention was commenced and provides fast transportation to Expo and Changi Airport.
- Singapore's 1st air-conditioned bus interchange opened at Toa Payoh, which let commuters wait for buses in air-conditioned comfort.
2003- North east line (NEL) and Sengkang Lrt commenced operations.
2004- The name "TIBS" was changed to SMRT Buses Limited (bus services) and SMRT Taxis (taxi services). The livery of all buses were subsequently painted to red from yellow.
-Nicoll highway circle line works disrupted as the temporary walls supporting the excavation site for the tunnels leading towards the Nicoll Highway MRT station collapsed and caused the tragic loss of four lives.
2005-TVMobile installed in most of SBS Transit's buses. TVMobile is an outdoor digital television station, broadcasting live news & entertainment programmes throughout the bus's operation hours.
-The 10.3-km 15-station Punggol LRT opened, providing residents with quick access to NEL.
-The newly constructed Kallang Bahru Flyover was opened to traffic on 11 September 2005. It provides a convenient access for motorists to get on the PIE (Tuas) via Sims Way.
-opening of a new bridge across the Kallang River, linking Geylang Bahru and Upper Boon Keng Road, commenced on Saturday, 16 July 2005.
The new bridge connects Kallang Bahru and Geylang Bahru to Upper Boon Keng Road and Sims Avenue.
Other Facts-Woodleigh (NE11) station along the North East Line (NEL) will be opened at a later date.
-Circle Line (CCL) and Boon Lay Extension (BLE) are under construction.
-Thomson, Bukit Brown and West Coast stations along the CCL are shell stations, and will not be operational when CCL opens.
-Construction for the Downtown Extension (DTE) will begin soon.
