November 16, 2007EXPECT traffic snarls and security checks in the Orchard Road, North Bridge Road and Empress Place areas from Sunday till Thursday.
That is when the Asean Summit and related meetings and events will be held.
Motorists can expect slow traffic during the morning and evening peak hours in the vicinity of the Shangri-La Hotel, the summit's venue.
Although Anderson Road and Orange Grove Road will remain open, there will be selective checks on vehicles along the roads leading to the hotel. The traffic police advises motorists to use alternative roads.
There will also be key events on Tuesday and Wednesday affecting several roads. A gala dinner for the Asean Summit on Tuesday at the Raffles City Convention Centre will see the stretch of North Bridge Road between Stamford and Middle roads, and one of four lanes along Bras Basah Road closed for five hours from 6pm.
Some lanes will be closed nearby for vehicle screening.
On Wednesday, Old Parliament Lane and Empress Place will be closed from 2pm to 11pm for a reception at the Asian Civilisations Museum.
As delegates will need to make their way to the Istana for dinner, several roads from Connaught Drive leading up to Orchard Road towards the Istana will be closed for two hours from 7pm.
Signs have been put up on lamp posts in the affected areas. Messages will be flashed on electronic boards advising motorists to plan their journeys. Only authorised vehicles will be allowed into roads that are closed.
Affected bus services will be diverted and no vehicles will be allowed to park in the lanes near the closed roads.
Vehicles found doing so, or which obstruct traffic, will be towed away.
