LTA To Upgrade Road System Leading To The Sentosa-Harbour Front Area To Meet Anticipated Increase In Traffic
1. LTA will be upgrading the roads system leading to the Sentosa and HarbourFront area to meet the demand of the anticipated growth in traffic in the area when the Resorts World at Sentosa is completed in 2010 as well as future developments in the area.
2. The upgrading works will ensure that the road network in the vicinity of the Sentosa-HarbourFront area, which includes Telok Blangah Road and Kampong Bahru Road , will have the capacity to cope with the anticipated increase in traffic volume.
3. The improvement works are expected to improve traffic capacity of the road network in this area by about 30%.
4. LTA have assessed the traffic situation along the road network and have been working closely with traffic consultants from Resorts World at Sentosa to ensure that the improvements to the road network will be able to meet the increased traffic volumes as a result of the new integrated resort.
5. The scope of the improvements works includes:
· Widening of Sentosa Gateway and stretches of Telok Blangah Road and Kampong Bahru Road by a single lane in both directions.
· Converting the existing central up-ramp which links Telok Blangah Road (near Henderson Road) to the West Coast Highway (city bound) viaduct to a down-ramp which will link West Coast Highway (west bound) to Telok Blangah Road
· Construction of a new up-ramp which will link Telok Blangah Road to the West Coast Highway viaduct (city bound).
6. Tenders for the improvement works will be called soon and the project is expected to start in June 2008 and to be completed by January 2010, in time for the opening of the Resorts World in Sentosa.
Construction of new up-ramp and the conversion of existing up-ramp to down-ramp
7. Apart from road widening works, the upgrading works will include the construction of a new ramp to the existing West Coast Highway viaduct and the conversion of the existing central up-ramp to the West Coast Highway to a down-ramp.
8. This new traffic arrangement will provide a new direct exit point from the West Coast Highway to Henderson Road . This means that traffic going to Henderson Road will be able to use the West Coast Highway and bypass Telok Blangah Road .
9. Currently, vehicles traveling to Henderson Road have to do so via Telok Blangah Road and pass through several junctions from Kampong Bahru Road to Morse Road , before making the turn to Henderson Road .
10. The new up-ramp will provide the entry onto the West Coast Highway viaduct for traffic coming from Henderson Road , Alexandra Road and Pasir Panjang Road .
11. “With the opening of the Integrated Resort at Sentosa, we can expect an increase in visitor and vehicular traffic to Sentosa Island . These infrastructural improvements will provide a positive travel experience for both visitors to Sentosa as well as for residents staying in the vicinity,” said LTA Chief Executive, Mr Yam Ah Mee.
