SINGAPORE: Three vulnerable groups of road users are the focus of the Traffic Police’s road safety campaign this year.
They are motorcyclists, elderly pedestrians and foreign cyclists. They made up over half the 214 people killed in road accidents last year.
In the first quarter of this year, 53 people died from road accidents, about half of them were motorcyclists and pillion riders. Four were elderly pedestrians and three were non—Singaporean cyclists.
During the campaign, there will be exhibitions on road safety, workshops and programmes reminding the public to "Look Out. Stay Safe".
Launching the campaign, Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Law, said: "All of us who drive and ride on the roads, (we must) look out for these vulnerable groups — the motorcyclists, the pedal cyclists and pedestrians, particularly elderly pedestrians."
Motorists must also remind themselves to always look for ways to improve their driving behaviour, he said. — CNA/ir
