SINGAPORE: From May 7, motorists will be able to get real-time traffic updates along six major arterial corridors as 76 new electronic signboards along these roads begin operations.
The six road corridors are between Woodlands Road and Dunearn Road; along West Coast Highway; between Serangoon Road and Upper Serangoon Road; along Thomson Road and Upper Thomson Road; from Portsdown Avenue to Still Road South; between Orchard Road and Bras Brasah Road; and from Nicoll Highway to Shenton Way.
Four other road
corridors - two each in the western and eastern parts of Singapore -
will also be fitted with Arterial Variable Message Signs by the second
quarter of 2014.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on
Thursday that the extension of the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory
System (EMAS) coverage to major arterial road corridors will bring about
better incident management and, consequently, better traffic flow on
the road network island-wide.
Launched in 1998, EMAS comprises live video surveillance, incident detection and real-time traffic alert functions.
Beginning next month, the LTA will also carry out a S$98 million enhancement to EMAS equipment along eight expressways.
With
the existing EMAS equipment reaching the end of its useful lifespan,
the authority said the enhancement will ensure that EMAS can continue to
function as an important traffic and incident management tool for
expressways.
The enhancement will be carried out progressively and is expected to be completed by 2017.
Besides
enhancing the existing EMAS signboards along expressways to make them
more graphic-enabled - so that they can provide more information on
incidents - the improvements will also include the installation of
additional surveillance and detection cameras, as well as Web cameras to
provide motorists with more comprehensive traffic images.
These images can be accessed via the LTA's One.Motoring website or the My Transport.SG mobile application.
