SINGAPORE: More pedestrian crossings will have the Green Man Plus feature by the first quarter of next year.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has begun work to install card readers at 235 pedestrian crossings in 13 housing estates.
In 2011, LTA said
that the Green Man Plus scheme will be extended to another 500
pedestrian crossings. Another 265 will be completed by 2014.
At
pedestrian crossings fitted with the Green Man Plus card readers, senior
citizens and pedestrians with disabilities can tap their senior citizen
concession cards or the Green Man Plus Cards and have more green man
time to cross the road.
The additional time will range from three to 12 seconds depending on the size of the crossing.
On average, most of the selected pedestrian crossings will have five seconds more green man time.
Pedestrian crossings with the Green Man Plus feature will be prominently marked.
When
pedestrians with disabilities tap the Green Man Plus Card, the new card
readers will also produce a sound and vibration alert to notify the
user that the green man time will be extended for the next cycle.
Members
of the following five Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) can obtain
their new Green Man + cards from their respective organisations:
Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA), Singapore Association of the
Visually Handicapped (SAVH), Society of Moral Charities (SOMC), Society
for the Physically Disabled (SPD) and Spastic Children's Association of
Singapore (SCAS).
The new Green Man Plus cards will also be made
available to the Centre for Enabled Living (CEL) for distribution to
other interested VWOs.
