Chelsea's senior players are behind the club's push for Manchester City defender Micah Richards.
The Sun says Richards made his full England debut against Holland in Amsterdam last month and Blues boss Jose Mourinho canvassed the opinion of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Joe Cole about him on their return.
He received glowing reports and was told Richards is the real deal.
While he may have waited until the summer to buy him, the injury to John Terry and his team's defensive frailty has forced the issue.
Former Chelsea favourite Pat Nevin reckons it is the ideal solution to the club's defensive deficiencies which have seen them ship six goals in their past three league matches.
Nevin said: "It makes perfect sense for Chelsea to sign Richards now. He's got great ability and he's unique among the current crop of young British players in that he is probably the only one who could sign and play every game.
"It's a move which suits everyone right now given Chelsea's problems, Richards' ambition and I imagine that City will probably need the money to add to their squad." -

Chelsea are splashing out a stunning £18 million for Manchester City defender Micah Richards.
The Sun says Blues boss Jose Mourinho has made Manchester City's young England star his top target.
Chelsea's defence - without crocked skipper John Terry - has leaked six goals in three league games as they have slipped four points behind Manchester United at the top.
Richards, 18, has not been pushing to quit but City need the money and will cash in on their right-back in the January transfer window.
The clubs have all but agreed the fee and Mourinho plans to throw him straight into his team in central defence. -

Chelsea's defence has been built on rock solid proven central defenders or defenders that have been in the fringe and learning from the old masters.
Marcel Desailly - Solid defender. Taught JT all the basics of defending
Frank Leboeuf - Partner of . Formed the most fearsome pair of central defenders in the late nineties.
John Terry - Super defender, brave and reliable.
Ricardo Carvalho - Best defender during Porto's successful UCL campaign.
Personally, I think Richards would be a good defender but it will take another 2 to 3 years. meanwhile we need a steady defender.
How about Sammi Hyypia? -

Though he is steady and reliable,but when u put him up against fast and agile players like Cristiano Ronaldo,Arjen Robben..he is helpless.
His speed has slowed down over the past few years.
Plus,he is already 34. -

Man City boss wants Chelsea's SWP in Richards offer

Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce will consider selling Micah Richards to Chelsea - only if they include Shaun Wright-Phillips in their offer.
With Sylvain Distin baulking at signing a new contract, Pearce risks losing two top class defenders during the January market and is adamant that 18 year-old Richards won't be sold.
However, The Sun says Pearce would budge over Richards is if he can be tempted by the return of Wright- Phillips plus about £8m.
