It's also been a quiet summer in recent history in terms of the players. In 2002 when we were nearly bankrupt and we couldn't sign anyone, we had our most successful season in several years, could it be the same this year?
I think for very different reasons, I mean it's been quiet but we've still bought in four new players. I think what there hasn't been is the noise of how much we've spent but I think we've been very targeted and very shrewd in what we've done. We wanted to strengthen the squad and we went for specific players, the fact that three of those players were free was not the reason we went for them, we went for them because we genuinely believed they could add to the squad and add to the team, and it's really easy to say we can replace this guy with this guy, what you're looking for all the time is improving it and that's the difficult thing, and I have to say we've got a fantastic squad here right now and that's
even with Ballack and Pizarro not in there, we've got loads still to join us and Alex, so you look at the squad and the way they're performing out here and the last few days and we're definitely stronger than last season.
Last season there was a lot of talk when we signed Andriy Schevchenko and Michael Ballack about how they fit in but the one thing they had to do because they were such established and great players was fit in straight away because you play those players when you sign them. Might it be this time that the players will have to take a little longer to fight their way into the starting line?
sign them. Might it be this time that the players will have to take a little longer to fight their way into the starting line?
I think on the Michael and Andriy situation, we signed them for four years, it was everyone else that wanted instant success and I think we know enough about football and Chelsea and English football to settle in and we've definitely got the best to come from those two players which is great news. With Tal and Sidwell and Pizarro, they are big pros and are hungry to prove, with Sidwell he said he knew exactly what he was up against coming here, he's never shied away from a challenge and he sees this as a big one in his career and he's determined to make it work and that sort of spirit is fantastic to add to the team.
Did you have to make an argument for him to come or was that already set in his mind?
No, that was very much part of why we wanted him and why he should join us versus actually going in a team and be an instant regular. But I think such is the stature that Chelsea's now getting but you've still got to convince, these players want to play but again, the way they've fitted in over here it's been fantastic.
Pizarro's coming to battle for a place against arguably two of the best centre forwards in the world.
Yeah, but he's not the sort of person that it will frighten him. He did seven years at Bayern, a big club, operated in a big stage, and just completed Copa America. This is a guy who believes in his ability and is up for the challenge.
Obviously the biggest signing financially was Malouda, there was a lot of talk about how much Chelsea would or wouldn't spend. If a big player had become available would we suddenly have decided to go for him?
wouldn't spend. If a big player had become available would we suddenly have decided to go for him?
Again, we've been big news because we've spent a lot, we've been big news now because we haven't spent any, the money has been available and both José and I have said it on several occasions, for the right player, the money was there and it is there so it's not about being broke or restrained it's actually looking at what we needed as a team to progress from where we were last season and last season was not a bad season.
We've also got increasingly in the back of our minds the new UEFA structures for what you need in your squad to qualify you to be legal in the Champions League, how are we doing there?
Good, in addition to that, we've always said that having a core of our team being English is critical to our identity and the way we play football, and at the end of the day we play football in the English Premier League which is one of the best in the world so we should be proud of having English players and we're well equipped, and we're as well equipped as anybody to fulfil the regulations.
Are you concerned about staleness, because we haven't had so much change?
had so much change?
No not at all, I think we've bought in some good players. If there was ever any concern about that then first mornings training blew it away, the freshness, the eagerness, there's an absolute hunger on this team for success and there's hunger for getting the Premiership title back, that hurt everyone last year, there was no complacency, everyone worked hard and I think the way everybody's come back good rest, first time that they've had that much rest for a long time, I feel very confident about the team.
And how important is it that we come out of the tracks running season?
Well we've seen it. The quality of the teams around us, you can't afford to drop points early because picking them up, in then puts the onus on someone else and we never like someone else to determine our future.
