It's the long weekend for us, Civic holiday on Monday. But with the gas prices, we ain't driving up north. Not to picnic, nor fishing nor anywhere.
But got two dinner invitations (Sat and Mon) on my agenda liao. 
So, I guess nothing is new. It's an Eating Weekend. -

changed new oil .......
changed new transmission fluid ......
replaced the oil and fuel filter .......
tightened the power steering belt ......
she's ready for ROADTRIP now .... -

2. buy a new filter
3. disconnect the battery, else you'll be squirted with petrol from the fuel pump
4. slide under with a basin ... loosen the piping retaining screws ... yank out unit ...
5. connect new filter to pipes, make sure you got the "in" and "out" right ...
6. tighten up the piping screws ....
7. screw it in place
Voila ! ....
you've saved yourself a bunch of money too ! .. -

1. Engine flush solutions might be beneficial on older vehicles that have sludge build-up in the engine block, but it is a complete waste of money on newer vehicles. Besides, most engine oils already have detergent additives that do essentially the same thing.
2. In addition to loosening/removing the oil pan screw to drain the oil, also remove the oil filler cap at the top of the engine block. This vents the block and allows more of the old oil to drain out.
3. Avoid the tendency to overtighten the new oil filter. Most oil filters only need to be screwed in until they are "hand tight." There should be directions on the filter canister itself indicating how much more to turn the filter after the O-ring contacts the base.
4. After you've replaced the oil and filter, start the vehicle and let it run a few minutes so that you can check under the engine to ensure nothing is leaking.
And yes, as Fatum has noted, you do save a boatload of money doing it yourself, plus you ensure that the task is done correctly. -

On vehicles with fuel-injected engines (i.e., most modern vehicles), fuel in the fuel line is always under pressure, even with the engine off and battery disconnected. Disconnecting the fuel line from the filter will result in raw fuel spraying everywhere until the pressure is relieved. Obviously, raw fuel sprawing onto a hot engine block and an even hotter exhaust manifold can lead to Bad Things.
Most factory service manuals (including those for my two Nissans) recommend the following method of relieving pressure in the fuel line prior to any engine maintenance work (including fuel filter replacement):
1. Locate the fuse for the fuel pump in the fuse box, and pull it.
2. Start the engine. It will run for a few seconds, but the inoperative fuel pump is not pressurizing the fuel injection system, and the engine will die from fuel starvation.
3. Crank the engine a few more times to relieve any residual pressure in the fuel line.
4. Disconnect the battery.
The fuel line can now be disconnected from the filter without fear of raw fuel spraying out. Once the new filter is in place and everthing hooked back up, make sure to replace the fuse for the fuel pump before starting the engine. -

a bigger project coming up ... I'm going to try and replace the oil pump in the engine block this weekend .....

The "Check Engine" light in my year-round beater Nissan (a '95 200SX SE-R) came on last week. Pulled out the ECU and made it flash the fault code on the dash--turns out I need to replace the rear O2 sensor that's screwed into the catalytic converter. Oh joy, another $45 down the drain for an new O2 sensor...
