Go for external ones. They will make you sweat a lot, but be prepared that most aren't for practical use. Internal arts like Xingyi, Bagua and Taiji will need a lot of practice before you can really sweat, because you have to learn breathing techniques first.Originally posted by priss:Hi,
I am interested to take up martial arts as a form of exercise. Please advice which form of martial arts I should learn.. after browing through the forums, there are soooo many kinds..
I wish to learn something that :
1. sweat alot (good exercise)
2. practical use (not for show only)
Also, it would be very helpful if you guys can recommend places that I can go to learn, preferabbly near Toa Payoh...
THANKS!

TKD, karate, the Gar family (Hung Gar, Lau Gar etc), Northern and Southern Shaolin are some good ones.
Please refer to here for a list of martial arts courses in CCs in Toa Payoh.
In case you can't find any that you like, I recommend you my master:
He's called Master Chong, the man in red shirt and wearing a watch. He knows a few martial arts, from internal to external ones.
He goes everywhere, near beaches, in parks, you name it, anywhere near nature.Originally posted by priss:your master? where does he teach?
location is important...
go finish lesson then tired then need to run home immediately, take taxi also cheaper =x
hahaha... yah i intend to whack people =xOriginally posted by FireIce:means u are intending of whacking ppl?

i mean if learn martial arts, but you can't do jack with it, then it's a little pointless also...
like you learn drawing lessons, you learn all the history all the technique, but you can't draw a beautiful piece of painting.... quite useless right?
Hello, learning martial arts is not about whacking people. It's about protecting yourself and your loved ones and perhaps, if you are a soldier, your country. There are a lot of rules and ethics in martial arts, and it seems that you are in the wrong direction. You are not suitable for learning martial arts if that's your mentality.Originally posted by priss:hahaha... yah i intend to whack people =x

When I mean whacking people, it does not neccesarily implies that I'm going around beating people.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Hello, learning martial arts is not about whacking people. If you intend to show off only, please learn other things like BMX biking.
No, you are wrong. A martial artist doesn't aim to kill, they only aim to get ample time to run away if they start attacking.Originally posted by priss:When I mean whacking people, it does not neccesarily implies that I'm going around beating people.
As a woman, learning some form of defence is good. When I mean whack people, it can also be in cases of self defence. But at least the martial arts I learn can be of practical use at all. when you're self-defending, you will probably have to whack people as well right? showing off is when i can kick and punch but i can't do anything when there is real danger. and that's totally useless.
I'm 21yrs old btw.
It can be, depending on the situation. If there's a group of people, you sure wouldn't want an offense because no matter how skilled you are, you can't beat a group.Originally posted by skid:the best defense is a good offense isn't it mayi?
>.< I just want to learn martial arts... the ethics and rules stuff can come later when I learn...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:No, you are wrong. A martial artist doesn't aim to kill, they only aim to get ample time to run away if they start attacking.
Firstly, when you whack, you don't kill. You only hurt them such that it's so painful and they won't be able to chase you. You take this chance to run away.
Secondly, you whack to throw them off balance. Balance in martial arts is very important. Once you lose your balance, that's it. They throw you to the ground, force you to a wall, you can't fight back. You can't kick or punch, because everything will be well-defended. The only thing you can do is to step on their legs in this case if you are forced to wall. If you are thrown to the ground, you have to make sure you get up fast enough and run away before they catch you.
Thirdly, it's wrong to use self-defense just for whacking. It's as good as showing off. The best defense in every situation is to never provoke, or if the attacker decides to attack you, run away instead. If he catches up, it's only then you attack to get him off.
Lastly, there's more than just hitting, punching and kicking in self-defense. You have to learn how to fall properly in case you are off balanced by the attacker. You also have to learn to be alert, street smart and use your common sense.
Alert meaning not SMSing or talking on the phone when going to any place. Talking or SMSing makes you less aware of your surrounding, and more prone to attacks.
Street smart some areas are known to be very popular where fights can break out. Avoid these areas. It also means that you have to know your way around a lot of places. If you are not sure, just don't go there or ask a few friends to accompany you.
Common sense don't take short cuts early in the morning when it's still dark (if you have to go to work between 6am to 7am when the sun has barely risen) or at night. Don't carry a lot of cash with you and cover yourself adequately. If you are going home late, ask your friends to accompany you, or take a taxi home. If possible, ask someone to wait at the bus stop or the lift for you.
where got lessons? near toa payoh or central areas?Originally posted by stellazio:muay thai..its really tiring..and no i'm not referring to those kickboxing classes at amore..
No, ethics and rules always come first. Just have to find the right master to teach you. You will know when what comes first when you start martial arts lessons. A lot of emphasis is on the ethics and rules.Originally posted by priss:>.< I just want to learn martial arts... the ethics and rules stuff can come later when I learn...
main reason for learning is I wanna lose weight. second reason is it might be useful. I never say I wanna whack or kill anyone!!! but knowing a few moves do come in handy in situations. you can prevent them by not walking in dark allies at weird times, but some situations are unexpected one!
thanks all for your comments, i guess i'll go to the CCs when I'm free
still havent decide which martial art to learn though.
Then how about all the little boys and girls learning taekwado and karate... I'm studying Psychology, and apparently children only know the universal kind of morals and ethics when they're 10+years old. >.<Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:No, ethics and rules always come first. Let's see. I will first disagree with point 1. The basic function of a martial art have always been to hurt, to stop and to kill. Of course a modern martial artist won't wanna kill anyone, don't wanna get into trouble with the law yeah?Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:No, you are wrong. sounds like a good plan to me. I definitely agree while your at it, you might as well learn something that is useful.Originally posted by priss:main reason for learning is I wanna lose weight. second reason is it might be useful.
