Even if one of them is the super duper uber grappler of doom!(TM), it would not mean much if you have a personality clash with the people at the school. Just go take the trial lesson and see which one you are most comfortable with, cost performance or otherwise.
Further, if you are coming to BJJ/grappling as a complete beginner, it really doesn't matter all that much which instructor is technically better; ALL of them would tap you on a whim.
I want to know where a school stands in term of the general skill level of the people involved (I can't tell as a newbie) and competitions will be the best measure of this. -

there are many reasons for any one person to take up martial arts. For most part these reasons are incomparable, its like trying to compare apples to oranges. To decide that one reason is more noble than another is pure bigotry.
competition is tough, raw and intense, it can bring out the best in a person and also it can shatter his confidence. however the outcome of any competition, win or lose, competition definitely does good for your training, if it doesn't break you first.
Its the people that claim that they see no value in competition that I'm weary about. you know, the people who say "I don't believe in competing because I've nothing to prove". It normally an excuse for not trying at all while trying to seem morally superior. -

Honestly, I couldn't care less if you believe us or not and I don't think any of us are inclined to make the effort to prove this to you. Results are results, these can be verified. Take our words if you want. Or, if you're really that interested, find out for yourself. Go down to the schools, talk to the people, test their skills, or heck, find out when the next competition is and go see for yourself.
We started off strongly advocating training at Darren's, perhaps too strongly. So now, we say to you, visit all the schools and find the one that you like.
If you, or anyone else, are interested to take up BJJ/grappling, then put in the necessary effort. This is something that you have to try out in person. Don't expect easy answers from the internet. -

I've been training with Chris Dewet at Contact Kinetics (http://www.contactkinetics.com/photo2.html) for about 18months now. One of the things that intially brought my attention to that class, believe it or not, was the bits of self-depriciating humour used on the website. At that time, that indicated to me a crowd that had little hang ups, people who understood the importance of having fun while training. And true enough that's what i got when up turned up on the first day. since then I've always been having fun during trainning. I don't think I would have this quality of fun and training elsewhere, even though other classes may seem more impressive. -

Join whatever school you want to. The more people learning BJJ or grappling, the bigger and better the community. Back when we started, there was practically no information on the internet regarding this, much less your youtube videos. Credible online information is still scare but now, all of you expect the easy way out. I can't be bothered.
Instead of asking for youtube videos and the like, asking for the addresses of the various schools would be more constructive. -

Yes i've no doubt Chris would know something about it. however the forum would be so much more powerful as a resource database if it had access to videos, pics, links, etc...
the forum can be a powerful research tool for newbies if handled properly. -

Actually, I always wanted to create a portal/directory for Martial Art schools in Singapore and then Asia, with reviews, tournament results and stuff. Idea was to go around exploring, meeting all the masters, trying out new styles, taking pictures and videos, etc. Would've been very fun doing it. Even bought the damn domain name... Still have it.
But, too lazy. -
I agree with S-Fire.... So much talk about proof, spirit of matial arts etc. A fight's a fight. Since when did we have so many pussies in Martial Arts? It's a sport. Not a freakin war. We not defending the F#$king jap emperor or something or the beetch queen of england when we fight. It's a sport and at the end of the round. Everyone is a friend. And if you want video proof, you are on the wrong site. It's a forum for crying out loud. Jeeeeeeeeesus. Different people take part in martial arts for different reasons.
Some do it for excercise, others do it for self-improvement.
I do it to push myself beyond my current limits, to conquer my own fears and well, to learn how to fight well. For me, competitions are the best places for me to do this. If I could find a legal way to test my skills out in the streets without getting hurt bad or hurting people bad, and without malice and anger, I would do it.
Competition also helps to weed out what works from nonsense. Without UFC, we will still be in the dark about what works and what doesn't. Without cross-training comptitions, akido people think that their art can help them defend themselves in a street confrontation. Some even think taiji will help you in self-defense. A friendly competition with a kyukushin karate, muay thai or BJJ fighter will change that misconception very quickly, and help us learn. All it takes is a hard thigh or liver kick and most people will immediately be unable to continue. I know because I've taken one before. Hell, just watch some clips on youtube, and you'll see even gigantic muscle bound boxers get incapacitated by a few thigh kicks.
I guess I'm a truth seeker. I've been in a position where I believed in something only to have it shatter in a real-world situation. This has taught me a valuable lesson. Always test, test, test before you need to use it!
