write through cache
A disk or memory cache that supports the caching of writing. Data written by the CPU to memory or to disk is also written into the cache. Write performance is not improved with this method. However, if a subsequent read operation needs that same data, read performance is improved, because the data are already in the high-speed cache. -

Facsimile
Originally called "telecopying," it is the communication of a printed page between remote locations. Fax machines scan a paper form and transmit a coded image over the telephone system. The receiving machine prints a facsimile of the original. A fax machine is made up of a scanner, printer and modem with fax signaling.
Fax standards were developed starting in 1968 and are classified by Groups. Groups 1 and 2, used until the late 1980s, transmitted a page in six and three minutes respectively. Group 3 transmits at less than one minute per page and uses data compression at 9,600 bps. The Group 3 speed increase led to the extraordinary rise in usage in the late 1980s. Group 3 resolution is 203x98 dpi in standard mode, 203x196 in fine mode and 203x392 in super fine mode.
Group 3 is still the standard today, but Group 4 machines can transmit a page in just a few seconds and provide up to 400x400 resolution. Group 4 requires 56 to 64 Kbps bandwidth and needs ISDN or Switched 56 circuits. -

A realtime conferencing capability between two or more users on a local network (LAN), on the Internet or via a BBS. The chat is really a "text chat," because the conversing is accomplished by typing on the keyboard, not speaking. Each keystroke is transmitted as it is pressed. The chat rooms of the 1980s were the forerunner of the "instant messaging" craze of the 1990s. -

Refers to any or all three 1280x720 high definition digital TV formats (HDTV) that have 720 lines of progressive scan resolution (the "p" ). The 720p formats provide the minimum lines of resolution in the HDTV standard. -

on-demand printing
The ability to print a pamphlet, manual or book in small quantities (even just one copy) as required. It implies printing from a computer rather than the traditional offset printing process. On-demand printing is environmentally sound, because hundreds of thousands of unsold, new books are destroyed annually. Publishers no longer need to maintain a large physical inventory of titles, which translates into huge cost savings.
On-demand also allows every book ever published to be available for the future, and it allows new authors to be published more easily. It prevents wonderful books from ever going out-of-print due to low demand. Using on-demand equipment, a complete, finished hardcover book can be created from scratch in less than 20 minutes. -

Personal Web Server supports ASP pages, but does not support an FTP function. -

DSML
(Directory Services Markup Language) A set of XML tags that defines the contents of a directory. Developed by Bowstreet Software, Tewksbury, MA (www.bowstreet.com) and endorsed by major vendors, it is designed to allow directories to work together. A utility for hard drive organization from Symantec Corporation, Cupertino, CA (www.symantec.com) that allows disk partitions to be changed on the fly without destroying existing data. By making multiple smaller drives out of a large one, their cluster sizes are lowered and waste less space.
Officially called "Norton PartitionMagic, " this highly praised product runs in Windows and supports FAT (DOS, Windows 95, 98 and ME), NTFS (Windows NT, 2000, XP) and EXT 2/3 (Linux) File Systems. Without a product like this, the DOS Fdisk utility is used to repartition a hard disk, and all data are lost in the process. PartitionMagic was originally introduced in 1995 by PowerQuest Corporation, Orem, UT, a company acquired by Symantec in 2003. -
DTV
Short for Digital Television, it is a digital television standard that is fast replacing analog (or NTSC analog) television. DTV enables broadcasters to offer television with movie-quality picture and sound. It also offers greater multicasting and interactive capabilities. While many use the terms Digital Television (DTV) and High-definition Television (HDTV) interchangeably, they are, in fact, two different things. DTV refers to the actual TV signal being transmitted digitally (instead of as an analog signal). DTV offers several broadcast options, two of which are considered to be HDTV formats. Some of the more common DTV standards include:
480i: -the digital version of current analog signals.
480p: - provides a sharper image and looks closer to HDTV than regular television. Today all DVDs can be played on EDTV
720p: - provides an image close in quality to 1080i, but allows 480p signals to be broadcast as well.
1080i: - the most detailed HDTV image available from broadcast TV
The numbers above represent the vertical resolution, while the letters represent interlaces or progressive scan (i) (p). For example, 1080i represents 1080 vertical resolution, interlaced. -
MOEMS
Short for Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems, also known as optical MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) and generally taken to include waveguides, diffraction gratings, moving mirror and moving bubble devices. The primary goal is to endow systems with the capability to alter or modulate the path of a light beam, and, in some cases, to temporally or spectrally modify the light beam.
