ram spoil?

to cut things short,
-i got a BSOD,
-rebooting didn't work, in XP it would auto restart just after start up, in linux, it wouldn't even load the kernel.
so i swapped the ram onto another slot.
-booting into windows, after about 5 minutes, the BSOD appeared again.
-in linx, it was ok, until i let it idle, 5 minutes later it hanged.
swapped back to original slot
-hang after running memory test
after few times
won't even run memory test.
so i let it rest. because this has happened before. after resting for half an hour, it has managed to boot into both OSes fine. i'm waiting to see if the BSOD will return.
so could it be that the RAM chip has gone screwy? -
maybe your free Mermory is too low

ur modem, ADSL is not compatible. Either that or some hardware not compatible.
you can easily get blue screen of death easily due to system conflict.
But cool, nevermind, let your system reboot, then should be ok already.
Nothing wrong actually, but abit leh-cheh only.
I believe you only get the BSOD once right? then subsequently your pc can work right? then nevermind lah. -
Too confirm whether your RAM module is faulty or not, swap it with another module that's OK, and see if it hangs up.
If swapping RAM modules still produces hang ups, then you should look closely at your motherboard for swollen capacitors. Look at your graphic card too for swollen caps. If there is none, open up your power supply to see if caps in there are leaky, swollen, or ruptured.
Voltage control issues within your PC usually causes these sort of BSOD. -
Have you tried it on other computers? Swopping slots sometimes doesn't help.
Tried using another RAM (same type)? Do you still get BSOD? -
Faulty RAM won't even allow you to boot up so if you can boot up and get BSOD then most probably it can't be ur RAM. On the save side, check for burning smell inside ur comp and see if there is any. If you worry that ur RAM is faulty just plug in a new module to test it out and that should tell you if it is what you fear.
If Linux can't even boot up, i think it maybe ur harddisk prob as in certain sector maybe spoilt. Cos for window BSOD normally is due to corrupt files/registry and if rebooting doesn't allow it something must be seriously wrong as it very very hard to get BSOD using win xp with NTFS file system. -
i checked the capacitors last night, also unplugged all the peripherals and tested them 1 by 1 to see whether any of them are causing a conflict, that's why i narrowed it down to the ram, as the changes only occured when i was toying swapped the ram around. this is the 2nd time it has happened, the previous time was last week i think.
i don't have another ram stick to play around with, nor a suitable com. the other com's a p3, while this is an amd64, the ram slots aren't compatible.
i ran a ram diagnostic tool last night but it didn't show up any errors though.
speaking of burning smell, there was a slight smell the last time it happened, there wasn't 1 this time round though. -
hmm the nxt best thing i would suggest is check for burn mark visually and by smell. but if you can boot up, i recommend you to backup up ur impt data just in case something worst happen. also if you can boot up and is using NSW, do a window error check as well as do a speed disk to check for any error.
but if all this doesn't show, then you may want to reinstall ur os if it happen again. troublesome but it good to do it once in a while as it help you to clear up those garbage in the regisrtry and this will also speed up ur computer too. -
There could be other causes. One of them could be the modem. It caused some problems at first and after that gave me BSOD. I asked for a replacement and settled everything.

my modem has been with me for 2 years.
never gave me any problems.
computer is a year old. -

My ram spoilt like that too
The system will run fine for a few minutes then XXXXXXXX:XXXXXXX something sector....the famous blue screen.....
Threw away the 512MB ram....
I buy a new ram and put back then no more problems -
Normally for me if a problem keep recurring and yet after checking everything nothing seem to be wrong, then i will reinstall my OS cos the possiblilty of it maybe due to the OS. Maybe a bit extreme but as i say it always good to have fresh copy of OS since a clean computer will always run faster.
But i think it best if you can do a check for bad sectors for ur harddisk.
Bottomline is if everything don't make sense then the next best option is reinstall.
