  I have an original copy of Windows Home.
  
  Can its CD Key be used for Windows XP Pro?

  But without an authentic CD Key, I won't be able to install certain softwares from Microsoft that requires verification right?

  What are the implications of using a non-original key? As in are there updates or softwares that I can't download from Microsoft.com?

  You won't be able to download softwares like Windows Defender and Windows Updates...

  Nope. Every CD has a particular key that can be used to install the OS. If you enter the wrong key, you can't continue with the process but to abort it.

  Yes, the implications are like what you said. However, there are more things other than not being able to update. For example, pirated softwares may have errorenous code in it. It may cause system to be unstable and may well damage your motherboard.

  I just remembered that I had an original CD Key.
  
  Oh well I've reformatted using my authentic XP Home already, so nvm.
