System Restore/ Recovery

  We press
  START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > SYSTEM RESTORE
  
  then the magic happens.
  
  But my terrible laptop.. i only succeeded in doing system restore only once. thats in 2004. after that, all attempts was unsuccessful. I am trying to recover some files which i had deleted during the past few days, ehnce i used this function.. And, can shed some light on what exactly is system restore mainly used for? recover deleted files? remove virus? and in my situation, what can i do without reformatting? I dont watcgh porn all MIRC all all this.. but play some PC games

  Reinstalling is the only way. A messed up registry you can do nothing to it.

  yea i can never system restore for some reason..always have a problem..

  Firstly, did you edit the registry any time after 2004? This is crucial because you have done a restore without any problems before 2004, as stated in your question. If no, proceed to my next question.
  
  Have you done a spyware/adware and virus scan? These programs are notorious for installing and messing the registry. Some of them can prevent you from doing a system restore. Go to this website and download those anti-spyware recommended. For antivirus, refer to this thread.
  
  After all those scans, post the results here. If possible, show a screenshot of your post-scan. It would help to find some persistant spyware.

  i use Lavasoft Ad-Aware but the spyware are those tracking cookies only. (i removed them). anti-virus is Synmantac, provided by the school..
  
  k.. i will do a virus scan and post the results soon..
