Your computer specs might not be good enough for your computer. Windows XP requires minimum 128MB of RAM to function properly, but it's very very slow. Give it 256MB and it will improve significantly. The more RAM you have, the faster it would be, but there's a limit to how much RAM you can add.
If you have sufficient RAM, it could be a problem of spywares. Scan your computer using a few anti-spywares. If you have doubts about which anti-spywares are legitimate, check this page:
