I don't defrag because my computer crashed once after defrag and I need to reformat it
I think something went wrong during the shifting of file fragments that lead to my crash

ok for me
i always delete unwanted programs, run anti spyware programs and then diskcleanup
then do defrag -
imagine the time it takes to defrag a 80Gig or bigger HD.

Defragmentation, to me, is a state of mind.

I heard the best way is to get into Safe Mode first before you defrag.
Another way is to close every single program, shut off all unnecessary processes including your antivirus and firewall, disconnect from internet totally, disable screensaver and if you want, kill explorer then you defrag and let it run overnight without touching it. Make sure the harddisk doesn't go to sleep or the system going into standby or hibernate -
i format and make the pc program a new person again.....

Defrag your registry is more crucial. Swap file second.

It helps if you're on NTFS, and you enjoy using the fast file index thingie that comes with NTFS. Other than that, you're better off defragging your swap file.

well for me... i do notice a difference before and after defragging.. and for me... defragging normally dun take very long.. maybe 20 mins..
i use windows defragger and/or norton speed disk for this purpose.. both r quite fast ba.. -

ANYONE know of any free harddisk recovery software??? i bought another harddisk and attached the original one as external drive. can detect it, will show the model no. but cannot read it at all. any expert can help? thanks. -
How does it work?
The purpose of Disk optimization is to optimize the time it takes to read and write files to/from the disk by minimizing head travel time and maximizing the transfer rate. The used techniques include:
1. Move all the index or directory information to one spot. Move this spot into the center of the data, e.g. one third of the way in, so that head travel to data is halved compared to having directory information at the front.
2. Cluster files around the directory area.
3. Move infrequently used files further from the directory area.
4. Obey a user provided table of file descriptions to emphasize or ignore.
5. Make files contigious so that they can be read without unnecessary seeking (defragmentation). -
how come sometime i defrag it stated i have not enough of memory to perform?

Never use the computer while defragging and no screensavers. It disrupts the whole process. One of top reasons for things going wrong in defragmentation.
