Sound driver or hardware is screwed...

  Using my friend's com now. His sound system is pretty screwed. All equalizers are disabled. Whenever a song is played, the vocals went a key higher and the background music went lower. This affects not just for music, but also for all system sounds. I tried listening using earphones and it sounded the same, so its definitely not the speakers' problem. Spyware scanning reveals nothing. He is scanning for viruses now.
  
  This first happened yesterday after he played a MP3 file. I've checked all the system sound settings but I still can't find out wheres the problem.
  
  I wanna find out, what can cause the sound of a PC to screw up?

  Nvm guys, its fixed. Updated his sound card drivers, restart comp, no sound, then roll back drivers and its back to normal
