Hi Xcert,Originally posted by Xcert:I have a system running on Windows XP Professional that is out of trial and I need to convert it to run on Windows XP Home WITHOUT destroying the data in the HDD.
I have the XP Home CD.
How do I go about doing it?
I tried booting up with the XP Home and but it wants me to format the partition.![]()
its an office laptop....originally running XP home...then I needed the mobility....and the IIS in the XP Professional...so changed to XP Professional...but since the licence is already used on some other system...I cant register the XP Professional...so leave it as trial until now....Originally posted by MosPosterior:Hi Xcert,
even if you proceed with the installation without formating, your data will be lost due to rewritten/overwriting of all windows files.
Games, software that requires registry can no longer works.
Maybe you can do a backup instead? Esp. your mp3s?![]()
no extra space to create that partition.Originally posted by BrUtUs:create a partition n put your files there

IIS can be replaced by apache web server. All you need is a localhost server right?Originally posted by Xcert:its an office laptop....originally running XP home...then I needed the mobility....and the IIS in the XP Professional...so changed to XP Professional...but since the licence is already used on some other system...I cant register the XP Professional...so leave it as trial until now....

erm... u have to speak to your administrator liao... installing the winxp home will clean your current drive... ask from him for a new license...Originally posted by Xcert:no extra space to create that partition.
I am doing software testing...already done on Apache....then need to change to IIS...for the completeness of the test...Originally posted by MosPosterior:IIS can be replaced by apache web server. All you need is a localhost server right?
Yup, it is better to uninstall your winXP before Microsoft detects its repeated serial number.
If you really deleting WinXP, all the settings in the registry will gone with it, so no point keeping those software, it can't work either.
So, since there are backups, reinstalling everything again is the safest.![]()
I already have the CD and Product key...just that I am trying to avoid doing anything as drastic as wiping out the HDD because its a loan laptop from other people.Originally posted by BrUtUs:erm... u have to speak to your administrator liao... installing the winxp home will clean your current drive... ask from him for a new license...
