I LOST 256MB of RAM!??

i on my comp juz now and found it becoming quite laggy. It wasn't that laggy in the past,Only from juz now. Then i go see my system properties it stated that i have only 256MB of ram. I HAVE 512mb ram installed!!and it has always been at 512!! where my another 256 go and how can i solve this problem??
My comp also siao siao always loses speed then u can only get back the speed when u restart another time,(For eg.u on the comp in the morning it only got 1.16Ghz recognised,then when u restart again it jump back to 1.92ghz)
so i suspect this is also happening to my ram now
(but i restart cannnot get back to my 512.
im pretty sure that my ram stick is not spoilt!!!!
maybe there is a way for me to set back my ram configuration to 512? -

Have you checked your hardware?
For example, is the ram chips loose? -

Using one piece of 512MB RAM or 2 pieces of 256MB RAM? -

ram spoil liao. happened to me before.try this to comfirm
remove any one stick of ram and restart comp with 1 X 256mb ram in the comp. if its starts up okay means that strip of ram is fine.
now remove that strip of ram, and insert the next piece into the same slot and on the comp, same thing. if it starts okay means the ram is fine.
try this on all the RAM slots, if everything is okay den i dunno how liao. if ram spoil the comp will not be able to start up with a single strip of damage ram -

Ram can be due to one 256mb piece being loose. I had that problem before and it was fixed by reconnecting the ram.
Speed, if you're using laptop, may be because of its power management schemes. The processor speed is reduced when it is drawing power from the battery so that energy can be conserved as much as possible -

can go into your bios and check your system specifications there first or not..report here will know if your hardware are okay. pass windows and boot up then got problem will then give alternate solutions.
please give detailed systems hardware spec and the ram module/ modules as indicated by replies here. if u cannot provide better send to the maker of the computer for help.
