Why?
let's leave AMD out of this comparison since its apparent that you are asking for 2 processor types from Intel.
to correct your post, you must comparing 'pentium 4, 3.4 ghz intel extreme edition' and not 'dual core' (an AMD naming) or the 'core duo' you were trying to tell, with the 'core 2 duo'
P4, 3.4 ghz.......
the older pentiums are made to run faster at the expenses of higher power consumption and heat dissipation in a smaller architecture. i believe the extreme edition were using 2 'virtual' cores for hyperthreading.
E6600 core2 duo.....
this newer processor has a true 2 physical core on die with the clock speed reduced so that their pipeline (threads) can be shorten. this is a concept that has been adopted by the successful AMD's 64bit processor that swept the desktop processor market by storm a couple of years back. intel has realised that they are unable to manage the increase in their P4 extreme processors's speed and heat and having to reduce the silicon sizes significantly while maintaing a longer pipeline (thread). it was even much too impossible to pack 2 physical processors on a die and hope to achieve more from it. in short the core2 duo is just like you regular AMD Anthlon's A64 X2 dual-core processor without the on-die memory controller.
