Need help buying a laptop in COMEX

Hi guys, I'm looking to buy a laptop in COMEX since they seem to have discounts and good deals but I'm really not much of an IT expert so don't know exactly what to be looking for. I mainly need it for use in University in a few months time when I leave, I'm not going to be gaming on it or anything powerful, mostly just working and general stuff. My budget isn't that high, i think about $2k max. Can anyone give me some suggestions on models to check out? Someone told me Dell makes pretty good cheaper Laptops and suggested the Inspiron 640, should I consider that? Thanks in advance

If you are considering Dell, you should read up some recent incidents regarding to Dell laptops...
Otherwise, you can consider a HP DV2000 series or Compaq V3000 series with your budget... -
Can you tell me how much those ones cost? How much discount would you usually get in events like Comex?

The prices are around $1999 in the market now, so during such shows, they may go at around $1699 or so... I recommend Acer if you're going for value. Forget about Dell, not exactly because of battery explosion issues (the batteries are made by Sony).
If you are a good bargainer (if not, get a friend who has good bargaining skills), you can easily haggle S$100 off -
Acer would be the way to go. Looking at the way Dell is recalling batteries, it's better to stay off it till everything is OK.
Asus is another choice. -
Thanks guys for the help so far, i asked my friend and he also suggests HP DV2000 series or Compaq V3000, also Acer Aspire 5540 or Travelmate 3280. I'll definitely go down see for myself and see what kind of deals they are offering
