Digi Cam to Laptop

  when i connect my digicam to the laptop using USB wire... there is a deng deng sound meaning detecting an external hardware....... but there is no dialogue box appearing..... and then nothing happens.......
  
  so i cannot load my pics to my laptop...
  
  where do i go to load the programme or get the thing to start?
  
  can anyone help?
